Rapper Ty has died from Covid-19 his management, has confirmed this evening.
The Mercury Prize-nominated rapper, real name Ben Chijoke, died of coronavirus at 47 years old.
Ty had been admitted into hospital in early April after displaying coronavirus symptoms.
A fundraising page established for the music star said he had been “admitted into the hospital with medical complications related to Covid-19.
“Shortly after, he was put in a medically induced coma to temporarily sedate to help his body receive the appropriate treatment.”
The donations page was last updated on April 19, shortly after the rapper was moved out of intensive care.
Ty shot to fame in 2001 with debut album The Awkward.
The rapper’s second album Upwards was nominated for the Mercury Prize in 2004, however, he was pipped to the post by Franz Ferdinand.
Ty went on to release a further three albums – his most recent being A Work Of Heart in 2018.
Last year, Ty formed a UK hip-hop supergroup called Kingdem, seeing him perform alongside Rodney P and Blak Twang.
Ty has collaborated with various other artists throughout his career including De La Soul and Roots Manuva.
Various artists across the music industry have paid tribute to the star on social media.
Blak Twang from Kingdem said he was “so numb” after hearing the tragic news.
Ghetts wrote on Instagram: “RIP TY. This ones deep I had a lot of respect for Ty one of the first from the older generation to embrace me and show me love fly high ty.”
Paying tribute Manuva wrote: “Rest my brother. You did good.”
Producer Hudson Mohawke said Ty’s music “had such a big impact on me at the time, still sounds fresh today”. The author Nikesh Shukla wrote: “Rest in peace Ty. You were one of the nicest people I ever met. Such a huge huge loss … Devastated.”
