Kate Garraway's GMB co-stars praise her strength amid Derek's coronavirus battle

Kate Garraway ‘s close friends have commended the GMB host as she continues to paint on a smile as her husband continues to battle coronavirus in intensive care.

The mum-of-two’s fellow Good Morning Britain presenters, Ben Shephard and Charlotte Hawkings, looked on admiringly at the 53-year-old as she banged her saucepan with a wooden spoon during Clap for Carers earlier this week.

The video, featuring Kate alongside her two children, was played on the ITV daytime show as the former I’m A Celeb campmate continued to say thanks to the NHS staff fighting to save husband Derek Draper’s life.

Derek, an English former lobbyist, was admitted into hospital in March after testing positive for the virus and was moved into intensive care weeks later.

He has since fallen into a coma and remains unresponsive.

Ben and Charlotte updated viewers of Derek’s condition during the programme, and shared how Kate is dealing with the emotional and unpredictable situation.

After reading out Kate’s latest heartfelt message about Derek, Ben said: “She also wanted to thank everyone for their extraordinary messages.

“She does enjoy reading them in the quieter moments when she gets a chance.”

Ben’s co-host Charlotte continued:” She’s still going through such an awful time.

“Our hearts go out to her and her family through everything she is going through. It is nice to see she had a smile on her face. Everyone has got their fingers crossed and sending so much love.”

Earlier this week, Kate penned an emotional letter revealing she is full of admiration for her two children, Darcey, 14, and son Billy, 10, for staying strong.

She wrote: “I couldn’t be prouder of how she & Billy have coped with these past 2 horrific months for our family – always finding ways of lifting our spirits & staying strong even when they can see me wobbling.

“Its so wonderful to see little green shoots of hope that this dreadful disease is easing and that hopefully soon we might all be able to see each other again and hug our nearest and dearest.”

Kate concluded: “That will be the case for many who have suffered from the disease, but also the front line workers who have been helping to treat the worst affected. The physical and mental scars will run deep and so we need to stick together far beyond the end of lockdown.”
