Spice Girls' Mel B says racist hate mail almost forced her out of village home

Mel B has opened up about the racist mail she received from locals after purchasing a mansion in Buckinghamshire during the height of the Spice Girls fame.

The singer bought the property in Little Marlow in the 90s, however her welcome into the village was far from friendly after shocking letters began dropping through her door.

She told The Sun: “The fact I bought it disturbed the whole village. I got not just hate mail but racist hate mail, which was shocking to me.

“It said, ‘Get out of this village, you don’t belong, you can’t buy something like this…’

“It disturbed me but I still threw some great parties there – really loud to disturb the village.”

She added: “I think there’s been a massive change when it comes to race and culture because we are a little bit more educated. Some countries are still way behind.”

However, following reports of racial hate mail targeted at the Wannabe hitmaker, a local at the time said they were “shocked” at the news.

Speaking to the Bucks Free Press back in 2000, they said: “We are very surprised and shocked that something like this can come into our village.

“Certainly, this issue has never come into our lives and this is the first time we have heard of these kind of problems in Little Marlow.”

Meanwhile, the police commented: “This happened when she first moved into the area and it was all sorted out and there’s been no problem since.”

Following her stint in Little Marlow, Mel B moved to LA, and resided in California for 15 years before moving back to her native Leeds after splitting from husband Stephen Belafonte.

During an interview on the Jonathan Ross Show, she admitted she loves being back in Yorkshire “surrounded by sheep”, and lives with her three daughters as well as her beloved mum.
