Piers Morgan and Dr Hilary clash over 'fool' Boris Johnson in fiery GMB debate

Good Morning Britain returned to our screens on Wednesday with Piers Morgan and Susanna Reid on presenting duty.

Dr Hilary Jones was back in the studio today (September 29) to discuss the latest coronavirus news as the number of cases continue to rise across the UK.

The GMB health expert faced the wrath of outspoken Piers, 55, on the latest instalment of the ITV breakfast show as the pair clashed over Prime Minister Boris Johnson.

It comes after Mr Johnson apologised for confusing his own coronavirus rules on social gatherings.

He was questioned about the latest Covid-19 restrictions coming into force for northeast England from midnight on Wednesday.

Piers Morgan lashed out at Dr Hilary Jones for defending Prime Minister Boris Johnson on GMB

Mr Johnson tweeted: “Apologies, I misspoke today. In the North East, new rules mean you cannot meet people from different households in social settings indoors, including in pubs, restaurants and your home.

“You should avoid socialising with other households outside.

“This is vital to control the spread of coronavirus and keep everyone safe. If you are in a high risk area, please continue to follow the guidelines from local authorities.”

Discussing Mr Johnson’s apology, Piers called the leader “A bumbling fool who simply doesn’t know his own rules”.

Dr Hilary said he sympathised with Mr Johnson

Dr Hilary said: “I feel a little bit of sympathy for him in that the rules are different in Wales, Northern Ireland and Scotland.”

Piers raged: “But he’s the Prime Minister, Hilary .They are his rules. He says the rules are easy.”

Susanna, 49, added: “Hang on, when a minister is on the radio and can’t answer the question, surely the Prime Minister says ‘Get me the exact script of the exact rules and I will clarify it for the national in the next couple of hours’.”

Piers interrupted: “Sorry for being pedantic but he announced the rule of six was so simple and that’s why they brought it in. He said that.”

“For England,” Dr Hilary added.

Piers pointed out: “The North-East is in England.”

Dr Hilary hit back: “He did talk about local restrictions in parts of England.”

Piers shouted: “Stop defending this clown, Hilary.

Dr Hilary replied: “I am not defending him.”

Speaking during a press conference in Exeter, Devon, Mr Johnson claimed: “In the North East and other areas where extra tight measures have been brought in, you should follow the guidance of local authorities.

“It’s six in a home or six in hospitality but as I understand it, not six outside.”

Official guidelines warn people living in the areas “not to mix with people outside their household or bubble in indoor settings, including pubs and restaurants”.

And hospitality workers are obliged to “take steps to ensure that people do not socialise outside of their households inside and outside your premises”.

Mr Johnson finished his answer by admitting: “Clearly for everyone watching this, this is one of those things people will feel is confusing.”
