Kate Garraway sends message to Derek's mum live on-air to mark special birthday

Kate Garraway shared a sweet message on Friday’s Good Morning Britain, marking her mother-in-law’s landmark birthday.

The GMB presenter, 53, revealed her mum-in-law was turning 80, promising to pick up her phone and call her once filming ends.

Her milestone birthday comes as Kate’s husband, Derek Draper, remains in hospital in a state of “minimum consciousness” following his devastating Covid battle.

Kate was inspired to share the birthday message after their guest, singer Rodney Earl Clark, revealed his dad was celebrating turning 78 on Friday morning.

The ITV favourite decided to give her own mother-in-law a shout out, saying: “It’s my mother in law’s 80th and I’d like to say happy birthday to her.”

Reflecting on their early start times – beginning to film at 6am – she added: “I just feel really bad because I haven’t called her yet.”

Making the birthday all the more poignant, Kate previously revealed Derek’s parents haven’t been permitted to visit their son in the hospital due to the Covid restrictions in place.

Speaking on the show last October, she said: “Derek’s mum and dad haven’t been able to see him.

“I think if they can go six months without giving a hug to their son, who is so desperately ill, then the rest of us can probably get through.

Derek was hospitalised last March, having contracted coronavirus

“Sorry, I didn’t mean to depress everybody. But that’s the reality of getting caught up in the virus.”

And, while Kate had been permitted to visit Derek in hospital last year, but with the rising rates of coronavirus in late 2020, wards have clamped down on visitors in recent weeks.

Speaking on Thursday’s show, the mum-of-two admitted she hasn’t been allowed to visit Derek since Christmas, adding the family was finding it “tough” to cope.

She said: “I haven’t been able to see him since Christmas. He’s back to seeing strangers in masks.”

“It’s tough,” Kate added.

Last month, the presenter revealed she has written an autobiography on her experience of Derek’s health battle, which is set to be released on April 29.

Titled The Power of Hope, the book will explore Derek’s hospitalisation, with Kate detailing how she has been “coping day to day with an uncertain future”.

Good Morning Britain airs on weekdays at 6am on ITV.
