Mike Tindall apologises after Zara Phillips 'wrong end' labour gaffe on GMB

Mike Tindall made an hilarious gaffe as he told Good Morning Britain hosts Ben Shephard and Kate Garraway he was glad he didn’t have to “go down the wrong end” to help his wife Zara Tindall give birth, as the midwife showed up just in time.

Mike and Zara have just welcomed their third child baby Lucas into the world five weeks ago, and the parents – who already have two daughters Mia and Lena – are still adjusting.

But when Ben asked the rugby player to confirm whether he actually did deliver the baby, Mike’s answer was an emphatic no.

“Not sure if you’ve ever played scrum half but is it true that you ended up delivering the baby because he came quite quickly didn’t he?” Ben probed.

“No that’s not true,” Mike shook his head with a laugh. “Fortunately the midwife got there in time so I didn’t have go down to the area – the down side… the wrong end – I was at the top end supporting.”

Immediately taken-aback by Mike’s blunt comment, Kate cringed and Ben giggled as he chastised the guest.

“I was going to say the girls will have their heads in their hands as you’re describing this Mike, to the business end you could have said,” the presenter offered, shaking his head.

“Yeah, look, sorry, the business end would have been a far better way of describing it,” an embarrassed Mike apologised. “But yeah it wasn’t what we were expecting.

“But fortunately Zara’s best friend Dolly who’s a maternity nurse was there and had the situation under control and then the midwife arrived which made me breathe a sigh of relief,” the sportsman continued. “I could just be chatting to Zara and trying to get her through it and squeezing her hand.”

Mike also appeared on BBC Breakfast today as he gave a heartfelt interview with Charlie Stayt and Naga Munchetty.

The rugby player, who was at Prince Philip’s funeral earlier this month to support his wife Zara Tindall, said he was very impressed by how amazingly the Queen coped within the circumstances.

Telling viewers the service was beautiful, Mike seemed in awe of the widowed Queen, calling her “brave” and “amazing”.

“I thought that the funeral was beautifully done,” he shared.

“But at the same time it was – having to see the Queen make a stand in terms of what the world is at the moment and sit on her own, and be as brave as she was, I thought just summed her up as a lady. She was amazing.”

Father-of-three Mike went on to say that there was no wake after the service, which saw Prince William and Prince Harry follow their grandfather’s coffin around Windsor Castle in a process.

“The funeral finished, and then it was sort of get in your cars and go home,” he told presenter Charlie.

“That’s what was allowed, that’s sort of what the rules state,” he continued. “So that’s what happened.”

Admitting the day was “tough”, despite that the rugby player insisted it was a wonderful ceremony and would have been exactly to the Duke of Edinburgh’s wishes.

“I thought the actual funeral was done so well,” Mike said, nodding. “I think he would have been looking down and he would have actually been happier about the way that it happened.”
