All My Children star Ray MacDonnell dies of natural causes

Ray MacDonnell died of natural causes on June 10 aged 93 in his home in Chappaqua, New York, with his memorial expected to be private with close relatives and family, his daughter said.

Sarah MacDonnell, one of his three children, told Michael Fairman TV of the memorial just over two weeks after her father had passed away.

Most famous for his role in All My Children, Ray spent more than 40 years on its soap after joining in 1970, before retiring when it moved its production from New York to Los Angeles.

He returned to the show in 2011 for a few appearances as Dr Joe Martin with his on-screen wife Ruth Martin, played by Lee Meriwether.

Ray also returned to the ABC programme in for its final episode.

In 2013, the show was revived as a web series and Ray agreed to take part in a few episodes.

However, the series was short-lived and aired for just three months from February to April 2013.

Throughout his career, he has seen many proud moments, including a Lifetime Achievement Award at the Daytime Emmys back in 2004.

In his earlier years, Ray married his wife Patricia and had three children, Sarah, Kylie and Daniel.

Earlier on in his career, Ray appeared in The Edge of Night from 1961 to 1967, playing Philip Capice on the soap.

In a pilot which was not picked up, he played the title role of Dick Tracy in the live-action Dick Tracey TV pilot, but it was only the one episode.

He boasted a successful career throughout his time active in the industry, with many fans sharing their memories and will wishes following his death.

One user wrote: “Joe Martin, RIP. AMC was a special part of my childhood and Ray MacDonnell was a staple of the show.”

Another said: “I am so sorry to hear he passed. I am praying for his family, friends and loved ones and their health. We will always remember you Ray, AKA Joe Martin.”

A third wrote: “Oh I am so sad. May he rest in peace, and may all who love him find comfort in happy memories of him.”
