Sir Michael Caine refused to blink for eight years as he strived for Hollywood success

Movie legend Sir Michael Caine claims he spent eight years trying not to blink.

He went stare crazy after taking advice from a guide about learning how to act.

Sir Michael, 88, said: “I found a book in the library, which is called Teach Yourself Film Acting.

“So, I read this book and one of the things that stuck in my mind was, ‘Don’t blink. You must never blink’. So for the next eight years, I walked around trying not to blink.

“The thing was, people around me, my mother and everybody, thought I had gone nuts.

“They thought I was a psychopath. Every time they spoke to me, I used to frighten the life out of people.”

He was speaking to US celebrity interviewer Reba Merrill for her new book Making It: What I Got Away With In Hollywood.

But Sir Michael said the tip was a blinking good idea – because it set him on the path to big-screen stardom.

He added: “At school they called me Snake Eyes, but I was determined not to blink.

“And what happens now if you see me in any movie on a take, I never blink. And that was the first thing I learned.”

He went on to earn six Oscar nominations and won the Best Supporting Actor award twice – for Hannah And Her Sisters in 1986 and The Cider House Rules in 1999.

Recently, he appeared in Twist – a modern day retelling of the classic story of Oliver Twist as Fagin.

And the Hollywood icon has appearances coming up in Now You See Me 3, The Great Escaper, and Medieval, too.
