Martin Clunes' romance with Hollywood producer wife – huge farm to stunning daughter

Actor Martin Clunes, 59, is the star of programmes including Doc Martin and Manhunt: The Nightstalker, which airs this week on ITV.

He is also well known for comedy programme Men behaving badly, which starred Clunes and Neil Morrisey as flatmates in their thirties, opposite Leslie Ash and Caroline Quentin as their girlfriends.

But did you know that throughout his career, he has worked alongside his wife on a number of programmes?

Phillipa Braithwaite is a producer and executive who has worked on television programmes and films including Doc Martin, alongside her husband Clunes, who stars as Dr.Martin Ellington in the series.

The couple first worked together on 1994’s comedy film Staggered, which starred Clunes as a groom called Neil, whose wedding plans are thrown into chaos.

She was also the executive producer for documentaries including 2009’s Martin Clunes: Islands of Britain, Martin Clunes: A man and his dogs in 2008 and Martin Clunes: Islands of Australia in 2016.

They have most recently worked on the drama series Manhunt in 2019 and Manhunt: The Nightstalker, due to air on ITV next week, which was produced again by Braithwaite and starred Clunes as DCI Colin Sutton.

In addition to working alongside Clunes, Braithwaite has also been the executive producer for Hollywood films including Sliding Doors in 1998, which starred Gwyneth Paltrow.

The film, which was written and directed by Peter Howitt, starred Paltrow as an advertising executive who misses her train and the film plays out in two timelines – what would have happened if Paltrow’s character caught the train and what happened if she missed the train.

Clunes and Braithwaite met whilst working together, and married in 1997.

Clunes was previously married to actress Laura Aston from 1990-1997.

The couple have one daughter, Emily, and live on a 130-acre farm near Beaminster, Dorset, where it is reported that on their farm, the couple have a variety of animals including four dogs, two cats, 14 horses and chickens.

In an interview with the Irish News, Clunes said he proposed to Braithwaite after they were separated for a long period of time when he was filming in San Francisco and Hawaii.

Clunes said, “It was the longest we’d been apart, and I missed her so much that I proposed, while she was really jet-lagged and in such a strange place.”
