Dan Walker in major BBC Breakfast show shake-up as he's replaced by Jon Kay

BBC Breakfast was part of a major schedule shake-up on Wednesday morning, as usual presenter Dan Walker was missing from the programme.

Strictly Come Dancing star Dan usually presents the show alongside Sally Nugent from Monday to Wednesday each week, before Naga Munchetty and Charlie Stayt take over for the rest of the week.

But instead, Dan was replaced by Jon Kay on the red sofa alongside Sally and weather presenter Carol Kirkwood.

It comes just days after Carol was replaced by weather girl Sarah Keith-Lucas, leaving fans concerned about her whereabouts, as one tweeted: “@carolkirkwood The coldest day of the autumn and no Carol to warm us up!”

Dan hasn’t yet offered an explanation for his absence, his last social media update being on Tuesday night – and it looks like he’s back in London to train with his professional Strictly partner Nadiya Bychkova.

Dan was missing from Wednesday’s programme

He explained before beginning Strictly that he would have to balance his time between his home of Sheffield, BBC Breakfast filming in Salford and rehearsals in London.

Taking to social media on Tuesday with Nadiya at his side, Dan explained that they’ll be performing the Tango on Saturday night.

He explained: “It’s actually my favourite [dance] so far. I mean, I know I say that a lot… but honestly it’s so much fun.”

The pair have even come up with a story behind the routine, as Dan explained: “Remember the couple from the end of the Rumba, where [Nadiya] walked off and I was at the piano? Same couple!”

Nadiya chimed in: “They’re meeting now in Buenos Aires.”

“And we’re doing a Tango!” Dan teased.

But BBC Breakfast fans were certainly feeling Dan’s absence from the show, as one took to Twitter to praise his partnership with Sally.

Dan has been busy with Strictly rehearsals

They wrote: “Dan and Sally definitely make BBC Breakfast worth watching, well done everyone!”

BBC Breakfast has had its fair share of changes in recent months and bosses certainly aren’t afraid to shake up the format – especially after long-time presenter Louise Minchin made the decision to quit the show after more than two decades.

Sally was made her formal replacement after a long period of waiting to see who it would be.

And Louise has moved on to pastures new – currently appearing in this year’s line-up of I’m a Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here! in the Welsh setting of Gwrych Castle – and a lot less glamorous than Dan’s Strictly stint!

BBC Breakfast airs from 6am every day on BBC One.
