Emma Barnett has announced that she will be stepping down from her duties as the presenter of the BBC’s popular programme, Newsnight.
The 37-year-old journalist and broadcaster explained that she has other projects on the go and wants to focus more on the BBC Radio 4 show, Woman’s Hour, which is reaching “more listeners than ever”.
Newsnight brought Emma on board in 2019, at the same time that Emily Maitlis, 51, became the show’s lead presenter.
Taking to Twitter, Emma posted a photo and penned a long series of tweets. The first read: “Some news: After 3 very enjoyable years presenting Newsnight, I have made the decision to leave the programme.
“This is in part due to my role fronting Radio 4’s Woman’s Hour, which I’m thrilled to say is reaching more listeners than ever, and I have many more plans for.”
She then continued: “It is also because there are other projects in the pipeline to which I wish to dedicate more attention. The biggest thanks go to my editors, the endlessly energetic team, my guests, and of course, our viewers. It’s been an absolute blast.”
Emma also included a clip from a legendary interview she conducted with business minister Paul Scully that she was proud of.
Fans and friends of the star were quick to comment on her news, with one writing: “You’re brilliant Emma! Best of luck for what’s next xx.”
Another penned: “Sad to read this, Emma. You’re my preferred interviewer because you always pin down the interviewees, demand answers to the questions you asked not the ones they would prefer to answer and refuse to let them sidetrack you. Other interviewers could learn much from you.”
While a third said: “I love your Woman’s hour, so glad it’s going from strength to strength. I’m always delighted when you’re on Newsnight, you’ll be missed but I look forward to seeing what your new projects are.”
Newsnight co-star Emily Maitlis added: “We will miss you Emma! You’ve been fab. Good luck with new projects xx.”
