Sean Penn arrives in Ukraine to film documentary about current Russian invasion

Confused fans were surprised to hear that actor Sean Penn, known for his roles in Fast Times At Ridgemont High and Licorice Pizza, has travelled to Kyiv in Ukraine to document the ongoing war.

The 61-year-old actor was photographed at a press briefing at the Presidential Office in Kyiv, held by the Ukrainian government, as Russia began to invade.

He has also reportedly met with deputy Prime Minister Iryna Vereshchuk, members of the Ukrainian military and local journalists.

The official Associated Press Twitter account shared this message: “Filmmaker and actor Sean Penn is in Ukraine to work on a documentary about the ongoing Russia assault.”

“The Ukrainian president’s office said Penn was in Kyiv on Thursday and spoke to journalists and military personnel about the Russian invasion,” they continued.

The office of Ukraine’s president Volodymr Zelenskiy released a statement which commended the actor for coming to the capital city “to record all the events that are currently happening” so that he is able to “tell the world the truth about Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.”

They also commended Penn for “demonstrating bravery that many others have been lacking” and called out “Western politicians” in particular.

He was labelled as a “true friend of Ukraine who supports the fight for freedom”, which the country needs more of to “quickly stop this heinous invasion by Russia.”

Bewildered fans couldn’t believe that they were seeing the Hollywood star willingly inside of a conflict zone and wondered why he had put himself in such danger.

One Twitter user wrote: “I am genuinely curious as to why Sean Penn is there.”

A bluntly honest tweet read: “Ukraine needs a lot of things right now. Sean Penn is not one of them,” while another said: “Man, what the f**** is Sean Penn doing in Ukraine.”

Information and photographs proving his whereabouts have been circulating online during the full-scale attack as Vice Studios confirmed that he is filming a documentary, which he began preparing to film back in November 2021.

As the fighting continues it is uncertain where the death toll currently stands, but figures confirmed by the Ukrainian president say that 137 military personnel and civilians died on the first day of the invasion, with a further 316 wounded.
