Worried Sally Nugent asks BBC Breakfast colleague if he's 'safe' as sirens blare in Ukraine

BBC Breakfast presenter Sally Nugent’s interview came to a halt on Tuesday morning after she was forced to ask her colleague if he was “safe” to report from war-torn Ukraine.

Kyiv Correspondent James Waterhouse was providing viewers with an update on the current humanitarian crisis in Ukraine following the Russian invasion.

Appearing via video link, James continued to describe the horrifying details of what has been taking place in Ukraine’s capital overnight.

But as the reporter spoke, loud sirens could be heard in the background, leaving Sally concerned for his welfare.

Speaking from the studio in Manchester, Sally asked: “James before I ask you the next question, are you okay to stay?

“Obviously, there are sirens going off, are you safe to stay?”

Nodding along, James confirmed that he was.

Seeing the tension on screen, one viewer penned: “Waterhouse is doing such a good job in Kyiv, I hope he is being paid well!!

“You can tell he’s anxious by the way he plays with his ring as he talks #BBCnews #BBCBreakfast #Ukraine #UkraineRussianWar,” the social media user added.

Sally showed her concern on BBC Breakfast

Speaking openly about the recent attack on a building in northwest Kyiv, Sally asked James whether it was a pattern.

James said: “We talk about cities falling under siege where Russian troops are in the face of this Ukrainian aggression are pulling back surrounding cities, cutting off supplies and trying to bombard them into submission.

“This is what Russian forces have done for years and it’s not yet clear whether they have the capacity to do that here in Kyiv because here is such a massive city compared with other locations and Russian troops have faced difficulties.

“But it is a concerning time,” he added.

The journalist also described the destruction that has taken place in the capital as Ukrainian troops try their best to defend their city.

Discussing the crisis on the breakfast show, UK Foreign Office minister James Cleverly told presenter Dan Walker that the Russian plan of attack is currently not working as they’ve been met with “ferocious” defence by the Ukrainians.
