Corrie Elaine star Paula Wilcox still gets recognised 45 years after Man About The House

Coronation Street star Paula Wilcox has explained that taxi drivers still recognise and give her flattering comments for her role in Man About The House.

The 72-year-old actress was 24 when she landed her breakout role as Chrissy Plumber in the ITV sitcom.

The show ran from 1973-1976, and despite it ending over 45 years ago, the corrie star still gets recognised.

In an interview with Women’s Weekly Magazine, the actress said: “I get taxi drivers saying they used to be in love with me, and I say. ‘What do you mean, used to be?’”

She continued: “It’s very flattering after all this time.”

The 70s sitcom centred on a man who shared a flat with two single girls and was considered to be cheeky and daring for its time.

Created by Brian Cooke and Johnnie Mortimer, the popular show also starred Richard O’Sullivan as Robin Tripp and Sally Thomsett as Jo.

Wilcox acknowledged that Man About The House was “a lovely programme” and enjoys being recognised for a show that was “dear to people’s hearts.”

The actress has since starred in several different TV series including Emmerdale, The Lovers, The Queen’s Nose and plenty more.

Since 2020, Wilcox has appeared as Elaine Jones in Coronation Street.

Elaine was introduced as the ex-wife of evil Geoff Metcalfe, the abusive husband of Yasmeen and the father of Tim.

However, that wasn’t the first time the actress stepped foot on the cobbles.

The Man About The House actress first appeared on the ITV soap back in 1969 where she played troublemaker Janice Langton, the younger sister of Ray Langton.

She only took on the role for five episodes, but the Manchester-born star was happy to make a triumphant return to the soap 51 years later.

Coronation Street airs Monday, Wednesday and Friday on ITV at 8pm
