Coronation Street's biggest baby blunders – 'unrealistic' birth to no umbilical cord

Coronation Street viewers have witnessed a number of surprise births in the past few years – but not all have gone to plan on screen.

While soap bosses have been keen to portray the births as realistically as possible, eagle-eyed viewers have been quick to point out a number of baby birth blunders onscreen.

That’s not all, as viewers have also questioned the scenes following the births – as well as pointing out very obvious continuity errors involving baby bumps.

One of the most recent blunders to be spotted by fans was the birth of Abi Franklin’s baby Alfie – and here, Daily Star takes a look at some of the biggest baby blunders to have occurred on the soap.

Brooke Vincent’s baby bump is visible

Sophie Webster left the cobbles in 2019 to travel the world – but fans noticed that the character had a very visible baby bump in her final scenes.

While Sophie Webster may not have been pregnant, actress Brooke Vincent was, with her final scenes airing before the actress went on maternity leave from the soap.

However eagle-eyed viewers spotted a continuity error as Brooke’s baby bump was very clear to see as her character Sophie hugged a close friend, with one fan saying: “The director and camera thought they were slick. We can still see Brooke’s bump #AintFoolingNobody.”

Fans could clearly see the baby bump underneath Brooke’s jumper, with a second adding: “They’re not trying very hard to disguise Brooke Vincent’s pregnancy, are they?”

That was not the only continuity error involving Brooke’s baby bump however, as Corrie bosses had previously used different ways to hide her pregnancy while filming, including having the character stand behind piles of washing and shopping bags.

This had not gone unnoticed by viewers either, with a third saying: “Loving the different ways Sophie has to hide the Brooke bump.”

Abi Franklin gives birth sitting up

Corrie viewers were recently shocked when Abi Franklin suddenly gave birth to a baby boy – with many fans distracted by the way the character gave birth in the hospital.

Viewers quickly took to social media to ask why Abi was sitting up to give birth, with one saying: “Giving birth sitting upright. How does that work? Worst birth scene I have ever seen. Come on Corrie, you can do better than this.”

A second added: “Why was Abi sitting up to give birth? Shouldn’t she have been lying on her back?” while a third said: “There’s no way Abi could have given birth whilst sitting up leaning forward like that?!”

Viewers were shocked that the hospital breached patient confidentiality

Not only that, but fans were shocked even further when, despite Abi giving a false name at the hospital on arrival, they revealed to Toyah Battersby, whose partner Imran Habeeb had a one-night stand with Abi, that the character had just given birth.

The scene left viewers floored that Abi’s personal information was given away, with one saying: “Patient confidentiality?”

A second also noticed the huge blunder, adding: “These doctors have no patient confidentiality at all, blurting out that she’s had a baby.”

Aggie works in every hospital department

Along with multiple onscreen baby blunders following the birth of Abi Franklin’s son, Corrie viewers were confused even further by Weatherfield resident Aggie Bailey – who seemed to work in every department in the hospital.

After a series of emotional and distressing scenes where Abi abandoned her baby son in the hospital, she had a change of heart after talking to Aggie, who convinced her to keep her son.

Baby Alfie was sadly taken to intensive care after it was revealed he was severely sick, but after Abi started to bond with her son, Aggie suddenly turned up in a different department – leaving viewers questioning where she actually worked.

One said: “How does Aggie get EVERYWHERE in that hospital? One min A and E, then paediatric ward and now NICU,” while a second added: “Aggie who works in every department of the hospital.”

Viewers seemed quite unimpressed with Aggie interfering in everyone’s personal affairs at the hospital too, with a third saying: “Why is Aggie’s nose in everyone’s business? First it was Tim and now Abi, she’s only a nurse in the hospital and other departments have nothing to do with her.”

Baby George cries – but doesn’t move his mouth

Viewers were confused why baby George could be heard crying – but not seen crying

Mary Taylor is a fan favourite Corrie character and a doting grandmother to baby George – but fans were left confused during one on-screen blunder in 2017.

She had taken the youngster to work with her at the florist, but he began crying as she decorated his hair with flowers before taking snaps of them together.

While viewers could hear George sobbing, the character was not moving their mouth on screen, leading viewers to question the continuity error.

One said: “Why are they adding baby cries when the baby isn’t even crying.”

Another questioned where the baby cries were coming from, with a second saying: “I hear a baby but George isn’t crying. Who’s making the baby noise?”

A third added: “Baby George’s cries are clearly dubbed over. Usually they hide that by putting the baby in a pram with the hood up!”

Gemma’s ‘unrealistic’ quadruplets birth

Viewers called the birth of Gemma’s quadruplets ‘unrealistic’

One of the most memorable Corrie births happened in 2019, when Gemma Winters gave birth to quadruplets – including the first baby while suspended 700ft in the air in a cable car while visiting Llandudno in Wales.

She was later taken to hospital for a C-Section to give birth to the three remaining babies, but Corrie viewers questioned how Gemma could be up and about so quickly after the operation.

One viewer called out the ‘unrealistic’ birth, saying: “Coronation Street. Emergency c-section under a general anaesthetic … and there she is walking around a NICU unit, snogging Chesney’s face off.”

A second added: “Yeah… that’s true to life. That event would have been so traumatic. Massive fail.”

Missing umbilical cord

Viewers questioned where the baby’s umbilical cord was

Overall 2019 seemed to be a year for baby blunders in Corrie, as another character’s birth scenes were also called out by viewers.

Vicki Jeffries gave birth to a baby boy, with Michelle Connor lending a helping hand as the midwife was nowhere to be seen – but fans were quick to spot that the baby was born with no umbilical cord cut – and appeared to be very clean despite just being born.

One viewer said: “The police have arrived to ask her where the cord is,” while a second added: “How come every baby born in soapland never has an umbilical cord?”

A third also questioned: “So where’s the placenta and the umbilical cord?
