Britain's Got Talent's Jonathan Goodwin speaks out after injury which left him paralysed

Britain’s Got Talent 2019 finalist Jonathan Goodwin, 42, has thanked fans for their support after it was confirmed he had been paralysed after a dangerous stint on America’s Got Talent.

After his partner confirmed his health in a recent podcast, Jonathan shared a photo to Instagram as he thanked fans for the messages – but he seems in good spirits.

However, the star has confirmed that it’s likely his injuries are permanent.

He wrote: “Thanks for all the love and lovely messages. To answer some questions… I have a T11 spinal cord injury, which means I’m paralysed from the waist down.

“It’s likely a permanent sitch. If any of you want to race though, I’m pretty sure I can beat you… #bringit.”

His fiancé, Sherlock actress Amanda Abbington, 48, recently discussed the tragic injury on the Out To Lunch podcast with Jay Rayner, saying: “He’s paralysed now he’s in a wheelchair. Unless there’s a kind of stem cell surgery or that thing that Elon Musk is designing with the little chip, he’ll be like that forever.”

She praised her partner’s “courage and strength” and said he was “positive, upbeat and so strong”.

Amanda added: “He’s just incredible, honestly, like so happy, just like a very happy, positive human being, just liquid sunshine. He’s amazing.”

The escapologist impressed the UK judges at his initial audition as he escaped from a straitjacket while hanging upside down from a rope while he was on fire – and managed to escape with seemingly minimal effort.

He later went through to the final and in the years that followed he moved over to the US to take part in America’s Got Talent: Extreme.

His latest extreme stint saw him again try to escape a straitjacket while hung upside down 30ft in the air between two suspended cars, though he was crushed between them.

The timing was misjudged and the vehicles were released too early, which resulted him being crushed between them as they caught on fire.

Jonathan suffered horrific injuries including third-degree burns, a broken spine, a severed spinal cord and he broke both his shoulder blades and shattered both legs.

The daredevil has maintained a positive outlook as he said in a recent post that a lot has changed, but “love is a constant”.
