Ross Kemp says 'nothing prepares you for ambush' after terrifying war documentaries

Ross Kemp spoke about his critically acclaimed documentaries outside London’s Royal Festival Hall as he arrived for the 2022 TV BAFTAS ceremony.

He told Daily Star Online all about how he prepares for Afghanistan, revealing: “Obviously you get pre deployment training. But nothing can prepare you for an ambush. Once you’re in, you get through it. You get more used to and more exposed to it. And the better you get used to.”

“The first time I went to Afghanistan I was given a BAFTA the night before,” Ross mused.

Ross also opened up on his eye-opening recent ITV documentary, Searching For Michael Jackson’s Zoo with Ross Kemp.

Ross posed on the red carpet

“You make documentaries because you enjoy doing it,” he said.

“There was a story we felt we haven’t investigated before and we felt there was good reason for it because the access was very difficult.

“You know objectivity is what I’m in to, I’m not taking sides or trying to diss someone.”

“It was basically an honest look into what happened to those animals after Neverland closed. That’s exactly what it is.”

Ross is now known for his hard hitting documentaries

On his favourite projects, Ross said: “I suppose the thing I thought we had most freedom to go anywhere in the world and make good documentaries on interesting topics was extreme work. I really enjoyed that.”

“We would make seven documentaries in a year.”

As for his current projects, the former EastEnders star teased: “I’m working on one at the moment but I can’t tell you what is. It’s really… it’s not one of those things that people can sit in the middle of.”

Ross is suited and booted for BAFTA

“They’re either totally anti it or totally pro It. And that kind of excites me in terms of trying to make a documentary that doesn’t take either side and it’s hard to walk that line.”

Comedian, presenter and star of The IT Crowd Richard Ayoade is hosting the Virgin Media BAFTA TV Awards ceremony for the third consecutive year as it returns to London’s Royal Festival Hall on May 8.

Tonight’s ceremony marks a return to a full glitz and glamour in-person event, after the awards were disrupted for two years by the pandemic.

The Virgin Media Bafta TV awards will be broadcast live on BBC One and BBC iPlayer on May 8 at 6pm.
