Dan Walker's Channel 5 start date confirmed following BBC Breakfast departure

Dan Walker’s Channel 5 start date has been confirmed.

The former BBC Breakfast presenter, 45, will begin presenting 5 News on Channel 5 at 5pm on Monday, June 6.

The Strictly Come Dancing star departed his regular BBC presenting gig of six years earlier this month, bidding an emotional farewell to colleagues including Naga Munchetty and Sally Nugent.

Dan will appear on the flagship Channel 5 news programme alongside his new colleague and co-presenter Claudia-Liza Vanderpuije.

He also replaces Dr Sian Williams as lead anchor after six years in the role.

The hour-long 5 News programme will air weekdays from Monday – Friday, beginning at 5pm every night.

As well as acting as the show’s lead anchor, Dan’s new role will see him host a number of non-news programmes for Channel 5.

Speaking about joining Channel 5 earlier this year, Dan said: “I can’t wait to get stuck into the daily news show but I am also excited about making some great new TV for Channel 5.

“I love their ideas and creativity and it’s rare to get an opportunity like this where paths and ambitions meet.

“The chance to do something different was too good to turn down.”

Dan began his presenting career in sports, hosting Football Focus from 2009 – 2021.

In 2016, the Christian broadcaster joined BBC Breakfast.

He also appeared on the broadcaster’s celebrity reality series Strictly Come Dancing in 2021, where he finished in fifth place with his professional dance partner Nadia Bychkova.

Posting to Instagram last week, Dan shared a sneak peek at his new Channel 5 job.

Explaining his decision to leave BBC Breakfast, Dan previously said: “I love working alongside Sally and I love the team there, but Channel 5 came with big ambitions, with big plans, and I don’t think opportunities like this come around very often and I can’t wait.”

Dan will begin presenting 5 News on Channel 5 at 5pm on Monday, June 6.
