Hollywood star James Caan has died aged 82, it has been confirmed.
The news of Caan’s death emerged on his Twitter account, with a post reading: “It is with great sadness that we inform you of the passing of Jimmy on the evening of July 6.
“The family appreciates the outpouring of love and heartfelt condolences and asks that you continue to respect their privacy during this difficult time.”
The actor was widely known for playing the part of Santino ‘Sonny’ Corleone in The Godfather.
Devastated fans, friends, loved ones and celebs flocked to social media to offer up their condolences and fond memories.
Actor and film producer Robert Reiner said: “So sorry to hear the news. I loved working with him.”
Another user penned: “May his memory be a blessing. His work gave such joy and powerful stories and moments to us all.
“RIP James Caan. I love so many of his movies but maybe your first James Caan is always your favourite.”
A third added: “Damn… another good one gone. Rest well.
While a fourth echoed: “He was such a phenomenal actor and such a part of my movie loving experience. I am so very sorry for his passing. My deepest condolences. Rest In Peace James Caan.”
Caan also had starring roles in hit films such as Elf, Mickey Blue Eyes and Misery – to name a few of his stellar performances.
The cause of Caan’s death was not disclosed online and still remains unknown.
He leaves behind his five beloved children, Tara, Scott, Alexander, James Jr and Jacob.
While four of his children opted for life away from the limelight Scott Caan did follow in his father’s acting footsteps.
He starred in Hawaii Five, Gone In 60 seconds, Boiler Room and Oceans Eleven – along with its two sequels.
Arnold Schwarzenegger and Adam Sandler have led the celebrity tributes to the late star.
Big Daddy actor Adam Sandler, who worked with Caan on Bulletproof, wrote on social media: “Loved him very much.
“Always wanted to be like him. So happy I got to know him.
“Never ever stopped laughing when I was around that man.
“His movies were best of the best. We all will miss him terribly. Thinking of his family and sending my love.”

The Terminator Arnold who appeared with Caan in Eraser, added: “James Caan was an icon – a legend.
“He inspired everyone who has ever been in front of a camera.
“I was lucky to work with him and see his talent and his fantastic sense of humor firsthand.
“|He was a great training partner in the gym and a true friend, and I’ll miss him.”
