A Place in the Sun’s Jean Johansson was taken back when her house hunters struggled to get the French vibes in a 1960s house.
Julie and Derek were after a rustic house with garden in Hautes-Pyrénées, southern France.
With a maximum budget of £130,000, property pro Jean showed them farm houses that oozed French “shabby chic” characters.

One of them was a 1960s house with arched windows and wrap-around garden.
“Very quirky, I like it!” Derek said. “If we ever did the search, we’d never look for this style of property.
“But looking at it now, I love the style of the window.”
But the couple went silent when they stepped intho the five-bed house.
Julie said: “Obviously it’s not decorated to our style. That’s only superficial.
“I feel like I’ve walked into my grandma’s house. I’m struggling to get the feeling, the French-vibe feeling.
Husband Derek was not a fan of the shape of the lounge.
Jean decided to take the pair upstairs to give them a French-looking bedroom.
Julie was happy to see the wallpapers and wooden frames around the windows.
But Derek said: “One positive thing in here is the furniture.”
Jean gasped: “Just one?”
He explained: “I love the furniture but the room is…don’t like the room at all.
“I don’t like the shape, they’re not the kind of beams that I like in a bedroom. There’s a lot of work to be done in this bedroom.
“I want to look at the property and our hearts to race but this isn’t doing it, I’m afraid.”
Julie even called Jean going from “hero to zero”.
Despite the disappointment, Julie and Derek told Jean that they were still happy about the second house they saw, which had green wooden shutters and a good-sized outdoor space for their four alpacas.
