CNN’s Jeffrey Toobin will ‘regret masturbating on Zoom call for rest of his life’

Jeffrey Toobin, the former CNN legal analyst and New Yorker writer who was caught masturbating while on a work Zoom call called the scandal a “disaster” as he said he’ll “regret” it for the rest of his life.

The lawyer made headlines back in October 2020 when his bosses at The New Yorker spotted him unzipping his pants and pleasuring himself during an employee video meeting.

He claimed he believed his computer’s microphone and webcam were disabled on the call so didn’t think people would be able to see him.

But he was caught red-handed and the incident saw him fired from the publication, which he had been with for 27 years.

He was also initially suspended from his role at CNN.

Eight months later he returned to the news network as their chief legal analyst but stepped down from the job last August.

Addressing the infamous Zoom call nearly a year since quitting his longtime role at CNN, Jeffrey called it a “self-destructive” act.

“It was a disaster in my life — self-inflicted, self-destructive, and something that I will regret for the rest of my life, he told NewsNation back in May.

He added: “I have no excuses, I have only apologies, which I have tried to offer to everyone involved, including very much my family, which was terribly embarrassed by it.”

But despite his regret and embarrassment, he revealed things have been going well for him recently.

“It’s now more than two and a half years ago and a lot has happened — almost all good since then. And I feel like my life is in a very good place, actually,” he said.

When NewsNation host Dan Abrams asked him “What exactly happened?” Jeffrey refused to go into any vivid detail about the Zoom call.

He responded: “You know, I’m not gonna go into grisly details.”

But he doubled down on his claims he didn’t believe anyone would be able to see him, adding: “The only thing I’ll say about it is, I didn’t know other people were on the Zoom call, were watching.

“This was not an intentional act on my part. And I’ll be honest, I don’t really wanna go into the details.”

Jeffrey’s departure from CNN marked the end of his 20-year work relationship with the cable network.

“I was very fortunate that CNN brought me back and I worked at CNN for over a year after being brought back,” he said.

But he insisted he was not fired by the network when he left last year.

He added: “I was not fired by CNN. No, that was a mutual decision that I left, I guess it was last August.”

After leaving CNN, Jeffrey listed himself as a self-employed full-time journalist.

He’s also been focusing on his new book about the 1955 Oklahoma City bombing — Homegrown: Timothy McVeigh and the Rise of Right-Wing Extremism — which was released in May.
