Pussycat Dolls’ Nicole Scherzinger admits ‘women who want to please themselves are sexy’

Nicole Scherzinger admits she ‘battles demons and insecurities’ even though seen as one of the most beautiful women in the world.

The stunning singer opened up to The Glossary magazine on reinventing herself as she stars on the West End in Sunset Boulevard. Modelling a series of figure flaunting outfits, the 45-year-old discussed what makes a woman ‘sexy’.

Wearing a sheer top before changing into a mesh gown in her latest cover shoot Nicole, explained how she is now “more authentic” after rising to fame in girl group and dance ensemble, The Pussycat Dolls, in 2003. The singer spoke exclusively to the magazine about how she learned to be ‘brave and bold’.

As she looked back on her career trajectory from being in a girlband, The Pussycat Dolls to TV judge, solo artist and now an award-winning West End theatre star Nicole reflected on the differences for women from then to now.

“Back in that era it was about women wanting to be attractive and sexy to please other people, to please men. The biggest difference is today, what’s really sexy is women who want to please themselves. Women who want to be sexy for themselves. So, I think we’ve come a long way.”

Nicole, who recently celebrated her engagement to former rugby player Thom Evans, also revealed she is working on new music for an album, set to be released next year. She said of her new material: “It’s the most honest and courageous and authentic I’ve ever been in music. The songs are very anthemic.

“I battle with a lot of my own demons and insecurities, so it’s vital to me that all of my music has an upside to it.” Nicole also revealed how she likes “reinventing herself” to be “brave and be bold”, which was one of the reasons she has taken on the iconic character of Norma Desmond in Andrew Lloyd Webber’s famous musical.

“That’s what I’m doing in this show. All of my fears, all of my insecurities, all of my emotions, every part of me is being exposed,” adding, “That’s what reinventing yourself takes – the courage to show people who you really are.”

Nicole’s performance has wowed critics who called her ‘perfection’ and on Tuesday night her rendition brought the house down with the audience all standing to give a rapturous applause and some theatre goers even crying after the show from being so moved and mesmerised by her portrayal of the silent movie star. And last month Nicole herself broke down in tears as she was awarded Best Musical Performance for her turn in the role at the Evening Standard Theatre Awards.

The star welled up as she took to the stage at London’s swanky Claridge’s Hotel to accept the honour having beaten A Strange Loop’s Kyle Ramar Freeman, Crazy For You’s Charlie Stemp and Guys & Dolls’ Marisha Wallace for the award. Nicole explained that her role as Norma Desmond in the atmospheric musical had helped her “be accepted by London’s theatre community.”
