Dancing on Ice’s most awkward moments – from Joey Essex ‘kiss’ to Gemma Collins row

ITV’s popular Sunday night show Dancing on Ice is currently in full swing with the current celebrities showcasing their skills in the epic dance show.

Hosted by Holly Willoughby and new host Stephen Mulhern, the programme has aired a number of stunning moments. Last week, S Club star Hannah Spearritt became the second celebrity to be sent home immediately after receiving the fewest amount of votes.

With fans disappointed that Hannah never got a chance to showcase her skills again in the skate-off, the singer appeared rather cool about it all. Speaking on her departure, she said: “I know it was nice. I’ve really enjoyed it. And to be partnered with Andy has been fantastic. Thank you for the journey.”

But as well unexpected exits, Dancing on Ice has also delivered a number of cringeworthy moments throughout the years. Daily Star has taken a closer look.

Ricky Hatton punch

Boxer Ricky Hatton served one of the most awkward moments from this year’s series so far. The 45-year-old took to the ice during episode one but gave a rather shaky performance and was booted off the show the following week.

However, it was one highlight moment outside the judges’ scoring that had fans at home in stitches. Ricky sent host Stephen Mulhern flying with a well-placed left jab between performances on his shoulder.

The exchange left the onlooking Holly Willoughby gasping, while her co-presenter tried to quickly recover from being hit by a former two-weight world champion. Although the moment seemed to be rehearsed, it did cause a number of viewers to feel like maybe the punch wasn’t practiced properly.

Taking to X formerly known as Twitter, one viewer said: “Not Ricky Hatton actually punching Stephen Mulhern.” While another penned: “Script probably says ‘Ricky Hatton gives Stephen Mulhern a gentle push.”

Holly’s celeb ‘snub’

Holly appeared to ignore the former WAG on the ITV show

Last year, host Holly appeared not to notice former WAG Danielle Lloyd in the studio. During the show, the presenters head over to the studio audience to talk to some of the celebrity attendees as well as the contestants’ friends and families.

She spoke to football icon Jill Scott who was sitting next to Danielle. Standing directly in front of Danielle, Holly said: “I’m here with the stars’ biggest supporters and this lady needs no introduction… Not only is she a lioness but she’s a Queen of the Jungle too, It’s Jill Scott.”

After talking to Jill, Holly made her way to chat briefly to Joey Essex’s grandmother. But fans were quick to pick up on the fact she’d seemed not to recognise Danielle.

One fan said: “Danielle Lloyd being ignored by Holly in audience. Cringe.” Another penned: “LOL, Danielle Lloyd getting ignored my holly willoughby on #DancingOnIce.”

Gemma Collins blasts judge

Former Dancing on Ice judge Jason Gardiner was known for his sharp tongue and harsh critiques. But he met his match when former TOWIE star Gemma Collins appeared on the show.

Following her routine to Marilyn Monroe’s Diamonds Are A Girl’s Best Friend, Jason wasn’t impressed. However, Gemma was less concerned about his critiques and more concerned about the comments he reportedly made to the press about her.

Commenting on Gemma’s dance, Jason said it was more “Anna Nicole Smith” than Marilyn Monroe. But Gemma explosively hit back, claiming that he had been “selling stories” about her.

Launching into a rant, Gemma said: “Maybe if you didn’t sell stories on me, maybe I wouldn’t have been so upset this week,” she said, before signing off by saying: “Boring… Next!”

Government bash

The comedian rubbed viewers up the wrong way with his rant

Back in 2021, the UK was slowly trying to get back on its feet as Covid 19 cases contiued to soar. In the first episode of the series, comedian Rufus Hound was awarded a golden ticket from the panel which gave him immunity from eliminatio the following week.

However Rufus used the ticket to have a pop at the UK government during his victoy. He said: “Mate, we live in a world where the people we elect don’t want to feed hungry children. This is the least mad thing that’s happened to me in a long time.”

The surprising moment led to hundreds of Ofcom complaints at that time as many were unhappy with Rufus’ political stance. However the complaints these were eventually dismissed by the TV watchdog.

Jason Gardiner clashes with Karen Barber

Jason didn’t only feud with contestants during his time on the show as he also rubbed his fellow co-stars up the wrong way. Back in 2011, he faced backlash over comments he made to Karen Barber, who had moved from being a judge to the position of head coach that particular year.

After Karen contested one of his comments, Jason flippantly remarked that “if her opinion still mattered, she’d be on the panel”. But his comment came as a shock to viewers and the studio audience, with presenter Holly having to step in to defend the former judge.

Joey Essex near kiss

Last year, romance rumours continued to swirl around Joey Essex and his pro skating partner Vanessa Bauer. But things took a rather uncomfortbale turn when Joey made a move live on air.

After their High School Musical routine during movie week, Joey tried to kiss Vanessa. But she appeared to hold back and laugh it off.

The moment had fans hiding their faces with second-hand embarrassment. One viewer said: “Vanessa rejecting Joey’s kiss just then was very awkward.” A second added: “Joey attempting to kiss Vanessa was very cringe.” A third said:” Vanessa pulling away from Joey’s kiss has me cackling.”

Jason Gardiner Vs Denise Welch

Tim Healy husband of Denise Welch confronts Jason Gardiner live on Dancing On Ice 2011

When Loose Woman Denise Welch was on the show 2011, judge Jason appeared to have it in for her, and a few weeks into the competition, her then-husband Tim Healy decided he’d had enough of it too.

Making his way down from the audience, Tim leant in and famously said: “Listen, mate, she’s 52, and she’s got four jobs. How many jobs have you got?”

Sadly, Tim’s defence wasn’t enough to keep Denise in the competition. Despite her best efforts she was eliminated later in the episode.
