Rapper Killer Mike, real name Michael Santiago Render, has been taken away from the Grammys in handcuffs – after winning three awards.
One half of duo Run The Jewels, Mike, 48, scooped the gongs for Best Rap Album, Best Rap Song and Best Rap Performance on the night. His solo song Scientists & Engineers, and his album Michael, were the talk of the evening as he strolled on stage to accept them.
But shortly after, he was taken away in cuffs by LAPD officers, after an alleged “physical altercation”. The star was snapped with his hands cuffed behind his back and a cop’s hand on his arm as the activist was taken into custody.

TMZ reported the rapper was booked for battery following a citizen’s arrest. A spokesman for the Los Angeles Police Department confirmed: “On Sunday, 4 February, just after 4pm, a male adult was detained and handcuffed for a physical altercation that occurred at the 700 block of Chick Hearn Court.
“The suspect was placed under arrest and was transported to LAPD Central Division. The suspect has been identified as 48-year-old Michael Render and booked for Misdemeanour Battery 243(A) PC, and is in the process of being released.”
Videos taken on the night showed the rapper seemingly engaged in a row with security as he walked outside, with an assistant holding an umbrella over his head to protect him from the rain. He allegedly knocked down a security guard as he was trying to get past, shoving him in the shoulder.
He was brought into the arena for questioning, with someone in the crowd heard yelling: “Free Mike!” The incident came shortly after he told media that he “lives with regrets”.
In a statement after the awards ceremony, the rapper explained: “The only thing that limits your age is not being truthful about your age or what you’re doing. At 20 years old, I thought it was cool to be a drug dealer.
“At 40, I started to live with the regrets and the things I’ve done. At 45, I started to rap about it. At 48, I stand here as a man full of empathy and sympathy for the things I’ve done.”

The star branded his three wins a “sweep”, joking with the crowd: “For all the people out there that think you get too old to rap, bullsh**. I don’t f***ing care if you’re 78 rapping about how many gals you got in the nursing home, make sure we keep hip-hop alive.”
Mike has been extremely active in the political sphere, advocating for Black gun ownership and confessing that he “will never be against the second amendment.” He told The Guardian: “There’s no way that someone who represents a community that are only 60-odd years out of an apartheid should be willing to give a weapon back to the government, as the police choke you to death in the street and people just watch and film.”
