Former prostitute Divine Brown shot to fame after she hit the headlines for a Hollywood scandal.
The former sex worker was pictured performing a sex act on Hugh Grant in Los Angeles in 1995. The pair were arrested for participating in “lewd conduct” in a public place.
At the time, Hugh was in a long-term relationship with actress Liz Hurley. The pair stayed together until 2000, after being together for 13 years before parting ways.
Divine is reported to have raked in around $1.6 million (£1.2m) from the publicity she received from her arrest. In the late 90s she remained in the public eye for a while through work in the adult film industry, TV appearances and press interviews.
Born Estella Thompson and now 55, she looks totally different today than she did back then. In 2022, she was pictured looking out of sorts near her home in Atlanta.
Earlier that year, she was charged with battery, cruelty to children, possession of drugs and smuggling suspected cocaine into a jail, according to Fulton County arrest records, and faced up to 30 years in prison if convicted.
She was arrested on Valentine’s Day that year after police were called to her apartment who found a 13-year-old victim who told officers she had been hit. The Mirror reported the police report alleged Brown had been “grabbing her by her arm, throwing her around the apartment, slamming her on the couch”.
However, according to the Fulton County inmate database, she was released in 2022 with no further record of Estella Thompson in the system.
Divine previously revealed that her $50 ‘trick’ in Hugh’s car ended up making her a millionaire but a close neighbour claimed this was far from the truth nowadays. They told the publication: “She has no car, and the shoes she steps out in are nasty old flip-flops. Red shoes and no knickers.
“Divine has been in and out of trouble all her adult life. There is constant shouting coming from her home, mostly when she is drunk. It seems her choices may finally be catching up to her.”
Hugh has also spoken about his encounter with Divine on Marc Maron’s WTF podcast, where he confessed that it took place after watching his Hollywood debut in Nine Months.
He said: “I was about to launch my first Hollywood film – my timing was impeccable. My problem was – that was my first Hollywood film and I’d just been to see it.
“The film was about to come out a week or two after that, and I had a bad feeling about it. I went to see a screening. Everyone in it was brilliant, but I was so atrocious that I was not in a good frame of mind.
“I had a Ken Russell kind of lunch – and one thing led to another. I just was disappointed in myself. I don’t know what was going on. It was called Nine Months.”
