Kathy Bates, 76, sheds 100lbs as she admits she’s ‘not been this slim since college’

Kathy Bates looks completely unrecognisable after dropping 100lbs over the last six years.

The American Horror Story icon, 76, shocked fans after she emerged after years of keeping her head down, appearing in a small number of roles. But appearing on CBS’ Matlock reboot, fans were floored when she looked totally different compared to her glory days.

Now, Kathy has confirmed that following her stint on the drama, she is due to hang up her acting chops as she retires from the spotlight. She confirmed her plans to leave the limelight in an interview with Variety released on Wednesday (September 11).

“It’s helped me tremendously that, over the last six or seven years, I’ve lost 100 pounds,” she beamed. “I don’t think I’ve been this slim since I was in college.”

Recalling the moment she realised she needed to shed the pounds, she admitted that she “had to sit down every moment” she could whilst she was filming the NBC series Harry’s Law. “I’m ashamed I let myself get so out of shape, but now I have a tremendous amount of energy,” she confessed.

As fans watched the new series, many were shocked at the dramatic weight loss the actress went through. Some have now put the reason for drastic drop in weight down to drugs such as Ozempic, with several taking to social media to fuel speculation.

One user penned: “They got Kathy Bates on Ozempic? Damn!” A second account added: “Kathy Bates on Ozempic now too -we’re losing our fat empresses.”

Ozempic is not actually a weight loss drug, but a medicine designed to treat people with type 2 diabetes. However, a number of famous faces have in recent years admitted it to taking it for weight loss.

Kathy neither confirmed nor denied using Ozempic to help in her weight loss, but had previously addressed her decision to shed the pounds in 2019. Speaking about her new health kick, she explained that she was “so grateful” to be able to get herself in shape.

“I was facing diabetes – it runs in my family – and I really didn’t want to live with that,” the Tammy actress said. “It’s communication between stomach and brain telling you that you had enough – and what I discovered is if you listen to that sigh and push that plate away for just five minutes, you realise you’re satisfied and you don’t have to eat more.”

Kathy has already gone through several health struggles in her life, including a heartbreaking number of cancer diagnoses in her breasts and her ovaries. In 2012, she underwent a double mastectomy, but was then hit with other conditions.

On Wednesday, she revealed that she was ready to retire from the industry after Matlock finished its series. Starring as the main character Madeline Matlock, she admitted that the show was her “last dance” in the acting world, saying that it was time for her to move on.
