Matt Lucas ‘apologises’ to Millie Bobby Brown over Vicky Pollard comparison

Matt Lucas has issued an apology to Millie Bobby Brown after he was accused of mocking the Stranger Things star by pointing out her resemblance to his Little Britain character Vicky Pollard

Matt Lucas has issued an apology to Millie Bobby Brown.

The British comedian compared her to his Little Britain character Vicky Pollard after she posted a video wearing a pink jumper. The 50-year-old took to Instagram to express his regret for a comment he made in response to the clip of the Stranger Things actress, who also sported blonde hair much like Pollard.

He reposted the video, in which Millie called out the people who had recently been commenting on her appearance, with Vicky’s catchphrase: “No but, yeah but.” Lucas later issued an apology to the 21-year-old star, who is married to Jake Bongiovi, son of Jon Bon Jovi.

The Little Britain actor took to his own Instagram to write: “Dear Millie, I just saw your post and wanted to respond and provide some context.”

He continued, explaining the origins of his show ‘Little Britain’ and the character Vicky Pollard, noting the visual similarities that led to his comment. Matt added: “I thought you looked terrific, and I was mortified when the press wrote that I ‘slammed’ you, firstly because that’s not my style and secondly because I think you’re brilliant.”

Matt concluded with: “I would not have posted it if I had thought it would have upset you, but I realise it has, and for that, I apologise.” Millie slammed the media for “bullying” her about her looks and trying “to tear young women down”.

After turning heads at the BRIT Awards in London and during her press tour for ‘The Electric State’, as well as gracing the SAG Awards, Millie posted a heartfelt message on Instagram to her massive following of 63.3 million on Monday.

In the clip, which Matt Lucas used to make reference to his Little Britain character, she said: “I want to take a moment to address something that I think is bigger than just me, something that affects every young woman who grows up under public scrutiny.

“I started in this industry when I was 10 years old. I grew up in front of the world, and for some reason, people can’t seem to grow with me. Instead, they act like I’m supposed to stay frozen in time, like I should still look the way I did on ‘Stranger Things’ Season one.”

Millie branded herself a “target” and slammed journalists that had written negatively about the actress’ appearance. She continued: “This isn’t journalism. This is bullying. The fact that adult writers are spending their time dissecting my face, my body, my choices, it’s disturbing. The fact that some of these articles are written by women?”
