Dozens of people have been killed and many others taken to hospital after music lovers gathered to watch Rubby Pérez perform, a night that ended in disaster when the venue’s roof suddenly collapsed
A singer has died after a nightclub roof collapsed.
The incident happened at the Jet Set club in the Dominican Republic as fans gathered to watch merengue singer Rubby Pérez. He was sadly one of the first people listed as missing before local reports sadly confirmed him dead.
Pérez is known for his hits such as Buscando Tus Besos, Dame Veneno, Enamorado De Ella, Hazme Olvidarla and Tonto Corazón. His self titled album spent two weeks in the Tropical chart list and peaked at number 15.
His single Love Her hit number 29 on the Latin charts. Back in 1998 in Venezuela, Rubby won gold and platinum albums for his first solo album and Globo awards for Best Song and Album of the Year.
It has been reported that at least 58 people died and more than 150 people were taken to hospital after the Jet Set club’s roof collapsed. It has not yet been confirmed what caused the tragedy.
Major League Baseball player Octavio Dotel was among the people who were transported to hospital, but sadly officials have confirmed that he later died.
Yahoo News reported that a spokesperson for the nation’s sports ministry confirmed the news of Dotel’s death. He was just 51-years-old and debuted for the New York Mets back in 1999.
He played for teams including the Astros, Yankees and White Soz until 2013. Local authorities have said fellow baseball star Tony Blanco also died.
Enrique Paulino told reporters that the gig started just before midnight. Roughly an hour later the roof fell in and Associated Press reported that a saxophonist was also killed.
Carolina Mejía de Garrigó, the mayor of Santo Domingo, took to X/Twitter to write a message of condolence after hearing the horrifying news.
The message read: “Our city wakes up to a terrible tragedy that occurred at the Jet Set nightclub. My deepest sympathy goes out to the families still waiting for news of their loved ones.”
Emergency crews gathered to pull survivors from the rubble of the nightclub, while reports say that victims’ families and loved ones also rushed to help with the search.
