Sex Pistols rocker Sid Vicious is one of the most iconic names in punk history and the musician had a seriously dark past that will leave you completely speechless
Sex Pistols’ Sid Vicious had a truly tumultuous life.
The bass player, real name Simon John Ritchie, died aged just 21-years-old back in 1979 and has remained arguably the biggest punk icon ever – despite not being regarded as a very good musician.
His fellow band member John Lydon, better known as Johnny Rotten, nicknamed him Sid Vicious after he was bitten by Lydon’s hamster, named after Syd Barrett.
Aside from their punk music, the four members of the Sex Pistols were known for hanging out at Vivienne Westwood’s clothing store Sex. Sid later died of an overdose but throughout his life, he was known for being reckless, wild and had an aggressive reputation.
He used heroin and many people believed that his mother was his supplier, although this has never been confirmed. When Sid’s friend caught him using drugs while still living with his mother, he apparently claimed that the narcotics were “me mum’s”.
Vicious certainly lived up to his nickname and was accused of violence throughout his life and it was speculated that he and girlfriend Nancy Spungen had a very toxic relationship.
Johnny Rotten used to share a squat with his rocker pal and has previously recalled the disgusting acts he used to find Sid performing.
“Sid would strangle cats and slash himself with an old Heinz baked beans tin lid.”
Sid’s former flatmate also said: “One night I went round and saw Sid and there was a cat in the flat. For no reason he decided to put a noose around the cat and hang it up in front of me. The cat was trying to get away but obviously it couldn’t.”
He also said that it was “the most disgusting thing he’d ever seen in his life.”
Another alleged story about the rocker will make your stomach churn. Reportedly Sid visited a party and speed was being passed around, so he went to the bathroom to find water to mix with the drugs.
However, the bathroom was covered in sick but this hiccup didn’t phase Sid, who allegedly plunged the syringe into the toilet and drew water from it so that he could inject the speed.
On 12 October 1978, Nancy Spungen was found dead on the bathroom floor of a New York hotel. Sid initially confessed to killing her, but then went back on what he said and claimed he didn’t do it.
The Sex Pistols star was awaiting trial for her murder when he died from an overdose the following year.
