A second Gavin and Stacey star has revealed they are up for a film spin-off of the beloved comedy, after the show’s writer Ruth Jones stamped out any hopes of another TV special
Alison Steadman is hoping there will be a Gavin & Stacey movie. The acting legend, who played Pam Shipman on the hit comedy, thinks it would be brilliant to revive it for the big screen.
She said: “I’d love it if a film of Gavin & Stacey came up. If it did, I’d definitely be up for that. “I think it would work as a film, too. Ruth Jones and James Corden are such brilliant writers. I’m sure they could make it work.”
Co-star Larry Lamb, who played her on-screen hubby Mick on the show, called for a movie earlier this year.
He said: “I don’t know why you don’t take the show, reorganise all the contracts and put it in the cinema. You’d have 35 million people going to see it.
“You’d make all the money over again.”
Gavin & Stacey ended with a feature-length special and creator Ruth Jones has insisted there is zero chance it’ll be revived. At last weekend’s BAFTA Television Awards, she said: “It’s definitely over. We are very lucky to have had a 17-year run with it.”
Perhaps Larry’s eagerness for a spin-off film is in part due to how hard it was for the actor to let go of the series in the first place.
Speaking to the Mirror, Larry revealed he used to think there was scope for more episodes, before slowly realising the show was over.
He said: “It’s funny because, until we actually finished, I thought, ‘We did a special 5 years ago and now we’re doing it again. So, maybe that’s what will happen again in 5 years time’. But then gradually, after filming finished, I realised it was the right way for it to end.
“It was a glorious celebration of everything that had gone on all the way through it. So, there was a lot of emotion and it was sad because you thought, ‘Maybe this is the last time we all get together’ but there was a joy in it too.”
