Harry Potter’s new lead has already starred in BBC show ahead of HBO reboot

The three young leads of the upcoming Harry Potter TV reboot have been confirmed, with the actor playing the boy wizard already having a BBC show under his belt

The new series has been cast

The three fresh faces set to star in the upcoming TV reboot of Harry Potter have been revealed – and the actor taking on the role of the iconic wizard already has a BBC show to his name.

HBO confirmed today that Dominic McLaughlin will be stepping into the shoes of Harry Potter, while Arabella Stanton and Alastair Stout will be portraying Hermione Granger and Ron Weasley respectively in the new series.

Although all three young actors are relatively new to the scene, it won’t be Dominic’s first telly gig – as the soon-to-be Harry Potter is also slated to feature in the new BBC action-adventure series Gifted. The kids’ show is based in Edinburgh and follows the tale of a diverse group of Scottish teens as they uncover their unique superpowers.

He’s also lined up to star in the film Grow, alongside Bridgerton’s Golda Rosheuvel, Ted Lasso’s Jeremy Swift, Shaun of the Dead’s Nick Frost and comedian Joe Wilkinson.

The three leads have been chosen after an extensive search

Meanwhile, Arabella – who’s landed the role of Hermione – has some West End experience under her belt, having played the lead role in Matilda the Musical.

Alastair will round off the trio as Harry’s best mate Ron, with the actor’s only previous screen appearance being in an advert for spud producer Albert Bartlett, reports the Mirror.

Harry Potter’s executive producers Francesca Gardiner and Mark Mylod expressed their delight in a statement, announcing the show’s new stars after an “extraordinary search”, which kicked off back in September last year.

“The talent of these three unique actors is wonderful to behold, and we cannot wait for the world to witness their magic together onscreen,” they announced.

“We would like to thank all the tens of thousands of children who auditioned. It’s been a real pleasure to discover the plethora of young talent out there.”

The actor already has a BBC past

Slated as a true-to-book rendition by HBO, the TV series promises to transport both new and old audiences into the heart of JK Rowling’s spellbinding novels with each forthcoming season, the broadcaster has hinted.

The trio of fledgling stars are set to join an already dazzling line-up, featuring John Lithgow as Albus Dumbledore, Nick Frost as Hagrid, Paapa Essiedu taking on Snape, and Janet McTeer embodying Professor Minerva McGonagall.

John, celebrated for his roles in Conclave and Shrek, makes history as the inaugural American actor to step into Dumbledore’s robes within the Harry Potter realm. Notably, Richard Harris and Michael Gambon have previously portrayed the headmaster in the original films, while Jude Law and Toby Regbo have lent their talents to younger renditions of the character in the Fantastic Beasts prequel series.
