Liam and Noel Gallagher at the BRIT Awards – Most iconic moments over the years

The BRIT Awards have had no shortages of explosive and well-talked about moments over the years (remember when Jarvis Cocker exposed his behind during Michael Jackson’s Earth Song performance? Hard to forget).

But the Oasis boys – with their bags of mischief – have caused quite a commotion over the years from insults, cutting monologues, and even lobbing their gong into the crowd (we’re looking at you, Liam).

With the BRIT Awards 2020 set to kick off in a matter of days, we take a look at Liam Gallagher and Noel Gallagher’s notorious moments from the past.

1. 1996 – Oasis slate Micheal Hutchence during acceptance speech

With Oasis riding high from their chart-topping 1995 album (What’s the Story) Morning Glory?, and fast becoming one of the most talked-about bands, the mid-90s were the Britpop group’s heyday.

Liam Gallagher’s rock ‘n’ roll antics were at their peak, and he didn’t hold back when Oasis collected the award for Best New Band at the BRIT Awards in 1996.

Dressed in an oversized fur-lined coat, Liam grabbed the microphone from award presenter Micheal Hutchence, and said: “Right, first thing first. I heard Michael was going to give me a slap. So come on…”

With the INXS member brushing off the remark, Liam departed the stage, leaving Noel to make one last dig: “Has-beens shouldn’t be dishing out awards to gonna-bes.”

2. 2000 – Robbie Williams challenges Liam Gallagher to a boxing fight

The feud between Robbie and Liam Gallagher reached fever pitch during the 2000 Brit Awards when the former Take That member challenged the musician to a boxing match.

During his acceptance speech for Best British Single, he asked Liam for a fight.

He said: “So, anybody like to see me fight Liam? Liam, a hundred grand of your money and a hundred grand of my money. We’ll get in a ring and we’ll have a fight and you can all watch it on TV, what d’you think about that?”

Unsurprisingly, the fight never happened.

3. 2001 – Noel Gallagher mocks A1

Not a massive advocate of the pop genre, Noel Gallagher didn’t hold back when he handed U2 their Outstanding Contribution gong.

Prior to the Irish band collecting their gong, he couldn’t help but make a pop at Best Newcomer winners A1.

“This award ceremony over the years has been accused of not having a sense of humour, but when you see A1 winning best newcomer, you know that someone’s taking the p*** somewhere.”

4. 2007 – Slagging off the Brits panel

Making their grand return as a band at the 2007 knees-up, the brothers picked up the Outstanding Contribution to Music Award, presented by close friend Russell Brand.

“The first time I met him, he got so close to my face, I didn’t know whether he was going to head-butt me or kiss me – and frankly I didn’t care,” Russell said before presenting the accolade.

Liam marched up to collect the award and slammed the BRIT panel early doors.

“Seeing as we don’t get nominated for this sh*t any more, I suppose this will have to do,” he remarked.

5. 2010 – Liam snubs Noel in speech, throws mic into crowd, and Peter Kay labels him ‘a k**bhead’

Liam Gallagher made his mark during the 2010 ceremony when Oasis bagged the award for Brits Album of 30 Years for 1995’s (What’s The Story) Morning Glory?

Grabbing the microphone, Liam, who attended the bash solo, said: “Listen kids, I wanna thank Bonehead, Guigs [bassist Paul McGuigan], Alan White and the best f**king fans in the world.”

He then proceeded to throw his microphone and award into the audience as he walked offstage, leaving presenter Peter Kay annoyed by his antics.

“What a k**bhead,” the Bolton funnyman remarked after.

In response, Liam wrote on Twitter: “Listen up fat f***. As a real northerner, I was brought up to say to people’s faces not behind their back.”
