Barbara Windsor's Alzheimer's has worsened in lockdown confirms friend Ross Kemp

Dame Barbara Windsor’s husband Scott Mitchell is looking into alternative care after her health deteriorated substantially during the lockdown.

EastEnders legend Ross Kemp and close friend of Barbara and Scott confirmed the tragic news during an appearance on The One Show on Tuesday evening.

The emotional actor explained how the actress, who played Peggy Mitchell in the hit BBC soap, has seen her condition worsen over the past few months.

Speaking to hosts Alex Jones and Gethin Jones, Ross, 55, said: “Well, we did a documentary about Alzheimer’s and she was really the spur behind making that film.

“Sadly during lockdown she had got a lot worse and Scott her husband is thinking about finding alternative care for her because that is basically what happens with that disease.

“It is the biggest killer in the UK and sadly there is no cure.”

Explaining how Barbara and her husband are determined to use to the situation to help make a difference to lives up and down the country, Ross continued: “I think they decided once she got diagnosed they were not going to hide from it.

“They were going to make it as public as possible to create as much awareness as possible.

“For a lot of people when they get that diagnosis they don’t know what to do and I think someone like Dame Barbara talking about it has lifted again a lot of the stigma.”

Speaking earlier this year, Scott said: “At some point, it may not be sustainable to give her the kind of care she needs at the house.

“Now that we’re where we are, which is six years after diagnosis, it’s a very common thing for me to sit with Barbara at night, firstly her never having a clue that we are actually in our own home.

“She looks around suddenly and says, ‘Why are there pictures of me in this house?'”

The One Show airs on weekdays at 7pm on BBC One
