Alan Carr’s alcoholic husband admits he punched himself after posting black eye picture

After Alan Carr’s husband Paul Drayton shared a startling picture of himself with a black eye and claimed that he and the comedian had had a “bad row”, he has admitted he actually injured himself.

Paul, who married Alan in 2018, said he punched himself during a drunken binge after “falling off the wagon”, saying: “I hate myself.”

Within an hour of originally posting the troubling image, Paul removed it and instead posted: “I’m feeling very fragile at the minute and would like to say that Alan would not and has never hit me.”

Speaking to the Mail Online, Paul said: “I punched myself in the face because I hate myself. There was no fight.

“The Instagram post was just a joke, that’s all.”

Paul added that he was “getting the help he needed” from “the people that matter”.

Meanwhile, Alan, 45, has also released a statement stating that he was not involved in an altercation and that his husband had been drinking again.

Alan told the Sun: “While I was away filming on location the past few weeks, Paul fell off the wagon and started drinking again.

“When I arrived back home from Wales, Paul was covered in scratches and bruises from a drinking binge.”

The Chatty Man host added: “We are now working together to get the help he needs to get better which is our number one priority right now.”

Previously Alan has opened up about his other half’s struggle with booze and that lockdown had made it harder for him to stick to being teetotal.

Paul went into rehab in 2018 for alcohol problems the same year he married Alan at Adele’s home in LA.

Alan told the Kelly Hoppen podcast last year: “It’s been tough for Paul during lockdown.

“He’s been saying, ‘Oh, shall we get a bottle?’ and I say, ‘No, we’re not getting any rosé wine in’.

“He’s been so good and I’m so proud of him.”

Alan has also cut down on the drinking, he said, in order to support Paul. He now only drinks on special occasions.

“I enjoy a drink and I have it on special occasions now, it’s a real treat for me.

“With lockdown and the rise of podcasts it’s reawakened my chatting.

“It’s made me want to chat more to people, and I’m quite good at it and I like chatting to people,” he said.

In his book, Alan said that Paul is “the best thing that ever happened to him” and that some of his alcohol woes were down to Alan being away so much.
