UB40 sax player and songwriter Brian Travers has lost his battle with cancer at the age of 62.
The musician of the iconic reggae band, died at his home in Moseley, Birmingham, surrounded by his family on August 22.
The band issued a statement on it’s Facebook page which read: “It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our comrade, brother, founding UB40 member and musical legend, Brian David Travers.
“Brian passed away yesterday evening after a long and heroic battle with cancer.
“Our thoughts are with Brian’s wife Lesley, his daughter Lisa and son Jamie.
“We are all devastated by this news and ask that you respect the family’s need for privacy at this time.”
Just before Christmas, the reggae star explained that he was due to face a second brain tumour operation in two years time after he’d suffered a seizure.
At the time, Birmingham Live reported that he had been taken to Queen Elizabeth Hospital, needing to have procedure at the back of his head to remove the cancer.
The same publication claimed he’d had “a double tumour removed” days later on March 28.
At a time when his bandmates were getting ready for the UB40 40th anniversary tour, Brian was sadly undergoing major surgery on his frontal cortex.
The band had much success with hits such as Red Red Wine and Falling In Love With You.
UB40 sold 100 million albums worldwide and earned themselves more than 40 UK top spots in the charts.
The band were last on stage together in December 2019 – prior to the Covid-19 pandemic – which saw them returned to their home town at the Arena Birmingham.
Aside from the switch up when Ali Campbell opted to leave the group in 2008, they’d pretty much operated as the same line-up for decades.
However, only in June this year, lead vocalised Duncan Campbell officially retired from music – due to ill health – with his role being replaced by Matt Doyle as frontman.
