BBC Breakfast’s Rachel Burden struggled to get an answer from Tory policing minister Kit Malthouse during an “unwatchable” interview today, March 26.
The MP faced questions following the Ukrainian refugee crisis with some Ukrainians being denied entry into the country or struggling to complete relevant paperwork.
Those attempting to flee war-torn Ukraine have been faced with difficulties with one child aged four being denied entry to Britain after discovering his passport had expired.
This comes after the Home Office said children did not need passports to apply for entry.
When confronted by the news anchor, Kit Malthouse squirmed which didn’t go down well with social media users.
Rachel said: “We’re going to speak to a Ukrainian woman who has applied to get her grandmother into the country via the family scheme.
“She says they applied for a visa on March 16, it took her a day to fill in the form it was so complicated, ten days later, they’ve heard nothing back. Is that good enough?”
Kit, 55, said: “Er well that seems slow to me, I recommend she gets in touch with her Member of Parliament and her Member of Parliament can access a priority help desk, in parliament which we’ve accessed.
“As I say, my parliamentary team this week that are doing fantastic work, clearing visas as quickly as we possibly can.”
This, however, didn’t go down too well with Rachel who hit back with: “This is an 83-year-old woman who has escaped war and is living in limbo!”
“We understand,” added Kit.
He had previously said: “We’ve recognised that people fleeing a war zone may not have all their documentation and we’re trying to take a compassionate and common-sense approach to this problem.”
Viewers couldn’t contain their frustrations as they took to social media shortly after the interview, with one Twitter user saying: “#BBCBreakfast is unwatchable when they start the regular attempts at gotcha questioning of Govt Ministers.”
“Very disappointed in Kit Malthouse this mornings interview [sic], #BBCBreakfast,” said another.
Before a third typed: “@rachelburden’s ‘hmmmm’ when interviewing the ever more panicky Kit Malthouse, speaks for millions #BBCBreakfast.”
Rachel claimed that the current visa application took two UK graduates 11 hours to finish the required forms as well as Ukrainian citizens being required to fill in an 11-page document in English for their dogs.
She added that some people claim the British government are attempting to make applications “as difficult as possible”, to which Kit disagreed with explaining that they are trying to make it “as simple as possible”.
