BBC Breakfast's Dan Walker disgusted as Nina Warhurst eats weeds live on air

BBC Breakfast presenter Dan Walker was left baffled and rather disgusted as his co-star Nina Warhurst ate weeds live on-air.

Nina was presenting live from an allotment in Derby to discuss the need to “use them or lose them”, and highlight the importance of growing plants and veg not just for the local community but for mental health.

But things turned awkward in the studio as Dan and his co-presenter Sally Nugent were both unconvinced by her facial expression while sampling some of the local produce.

Nina kicked things off by telling the camera: “Dee, who runs this spot, she eats something from this land every day and says she saves a fortune. Any produce that’s left over goes into the local community. And they’ve been telling me that weeds are not weeds!

“So a dandelion, for example – I’ve not tried it yet – but the advice here is to put it in a salad. I’m going to have a little bit now.”

Nina proceeded to break off a bit of the yellow flower and pop it in her mouth, sounding rather strained as she chewed: “It’s actually really nice. It’s really nice – slightly bitter, little bit sweet as well! I’ll be sprinkling them in later on, thank you!”

She told Dan and Sally: “Bit of advice for you there.”

But her co-stars were left unimpressed by her display, as they both collapsed into laughter, with Dan murmuring: “I’m learning so much.”

Sally questioned: “Nina, are you sure you like that dandelion? Your face is telling me something else!”

This was met with laughter from the crew, as Nina insisted: “It’s a face of inquisitiveness.”

“Yeah, hmm,” Dan replied sarcastically before the segment was brought to a hasty close. “Oh, she’s gone!” he chuckled.

It comes after Dan Walker made a “rude” blunder earlier in the show, as he asked viewers to “send us your gnomes”.

The hosts were chatting about the waning popularity of knick-knacks and garden ornaments like gnomes when the pair burst into uncontrollable giggles.

Dan couldn’t help but say: “If you want to show us your gnomes… er… or your favourite knick-knacks…” but couldn’t get his words out past his sudden onslaught of giggles.

And Sally was cracking up right beside him as Dan struggled to continue: “Show us your gnomes!”

“You can email… or tweet them to us,” he giggled, before adding: “We need a hashtag #ShowUsYourGnomes.”

“Just the way you said it!” Sally laughed, while Dan admitted it “sounded a bit rude”.

BBC Breakfast airs daily from 6am on BBC One.
