BBC Breakfast host Dan Walker has revealed he has been given life advice by legendary former Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson.
Dan, 45, has hosted BBC Breakfast since 2016, but last week announced he’s joining 5 News, as a replacement Sian Williams.
The presenter said Sir Alex, 80, told him to embrace the “next challenge” when they met up at the Grand National at Aintree last week, ahead of Dan taking up his Channel 5 role.
He told The Mirror: “I’ve had a long chat with Sir Alex Ferguson. It’s the first time I’ve seen him for a while and he looks very well.
“He’s given me career advice, which was lovely. He was talking about the move to Channel 5 and talking about life and accepting the next challenge.
“When he was moving to clubs, St Mirren, Aberdeen and all those sorts of things, it’s good to get advice from good people around you.”
’I’ve known him for a long time. I’ve done all his book launches, I used to interview him every week when I worked in Manchester.
“When somebody who has had his fair share of challenges says to you, ‘Just go out there and do it, embrace it,’ that’s quite nice.”
Dan’s departure from the BBC comes after the exits of other presenters from the channel including Newsnight presenter Emily Maitlis and former North American editor Jon Sopel.
Dan said the reaction to his decision from colleagues has been lovely, apart from [co-host] Sally [Nugent], who is a “bit upset”.
Asked who might replace him, he said: “I have no idea. I don’t know my leaving date.”
According to the 2020/2021 BBC annual report, Dan’s salary is £295,000-£299,999.
Dan previously said the opportunity at Channel 5 was “too good to turn down”.
His new job will see him presenting on Channel 5’s revamped bulletin show 5 News, as well as leading various non-news shows across the channel.
