Johnny Depp was seen laughing in court as his childhood friend Isaac Baruch took the stand and praised ex-wife Amber Heard for her “great teeth,” before breaking down in tears.
Depp and Heard’s £100million defamation trial continued on Wednesday (April 13) as both Hollywood stars turned up at Fairfax County Circuit Court in Virginia for the second day.
Baruch was introduced to the court as he described how he and Johnny had first met as teenagers in Florida and how he is thought to be his best friend.
The artist took the stand as he revealed details of how Depp had helped him out as a jobbing musician and artist by offering to sponsor an exhibition of his work.
Baruch – who previously worked as the office manager of Depp’s Viper Room club in Los Angeles – revealed that Depp had asked if he wanted to move out of his mum’s garage and into a Penthouse apartment owned by Depp at the Eastern Columbia Building rent-free.
When asked if he had taken up the offer Baruch replied “yeah of course,” prompting laughter in the courtroom as Depp was also seen laughing at his friend’s witty reply.
Baruch said: “I started crying. One day you’re in your mother’s garage selling paints for $200 on eBay next thing you’re at an art show and you don’t have to worry about diddly squat. I was flipping out.”
Baruch then confirmed that Depp had helped him financially by giving him in the region of $100,000 over the three years and seven months he lived at the property as he created 25 pieces of artwork for the show Depp planned to host for him.
He revealed that he had to tell Depp how he wasn’t going to be ready for the exhibit in the originally agreed timeframe, but Depp was easygoing about it.
He explained: “He looks at me and starts laughing and says ‘Ike, don’t worry, I do not care. I just want you to paint, however long it takes. I want you to paint every day.”
It was then revealed to the court that Depp and Heard would move into the same building just weeks later in the neighbouring apartment.
When subsequently asked about his relationship with her Baruch recalled that Amber “has great teeth” prompting more laughter from the court, as he admitted he had a good relationship with her as they all became “great friends.”
He said: “I fell in love with her just like Johnny did. She’s totally respectful, gracious, she’s got great teeth. She treated me with complete respect. Humour wise total locker room humour, demented humour.
“Every time I walked into that place Isaac you want something to eat, you want something to drink. Only one time she didn’t offer. She’s in the kitchen and she’s doing her beautiful facial mask – I said is that something that can help me. She looked at me and said no. I loved her.”
Baruch later broke down in tears in front of the court as he admitted his life had been drastically impacted by Heard’s allegations about Depp saying he “couldn’t even paint anymore” due to her actions.
He said: “It’s not fair, it’s not right what she did and what happened. For so many people to get affected by this. It’s insane.”
