Danny Dyer fit into EastEnders like a glove, but after nine years as Mick Carter, the cockney actor is moving on to new things.
Speaking to The Evening Standard, Danny explained: “There’s two months left and I didn’t take this decision lightly, I am still in debate how we are going to end, there are still negotiations how I think it should happen, and what the powers that be think should happen.
“It may be that we never see Mick again, but it will be an epic ending, I think I want to put a full stop on the job.
“It has been an amazing 10 years that I have had, it is a third of my career, but I am ready to move on.”
The actor is celebrating his 45th birthday today but he isn’t slowing down, as he has a few new projects coming, including a Netflix series.
When does Danny Dyer leave EastEnders?
Danny has done more than 1,000 episodes of the soap and by the time he calls it quits, he will have been in Albert Square for 10 years.
The exact date of his departure hasn’t been set in stone, though his final storyline will be told over the Christmas and New Year season.
The details of that plot have not been revealed, though it will slowly start to unfold as we leave the summer months.
The end is in sight for Mick, with Danny feeling that now is the right time to step away from the series.
Why is Danny Dyer leaving EastEnders?
It seems the actor simply felt it was time to move on, wanting to leave the show the right way after all this time.
Speaking to The Sun, he said of his exit: ‘It’s huge and it’s going to upset a few people.
“I will miss everyone but I want to go out proper. I came in proper and I want to go out proper.
“I wish I could tell you more. In the next couple of months you’ll learn a bit about what we’re going to do but I can tell you it’s huge. I want to go out in a way that’s going to get people talking.
“It’s a thing that needs to be discussed more openly and I think it’s going to shock a few people.”
What does Danny Dyer have lined up after EastEnders?
The biggest news following Danny’s EastEnders exit is confirmation he signed on with Netflix for a new quiz show.
Titled Cheat, it will also star Ellie Taylor, who said it “has all the elements I want in a quiz show; great questions, unashamed cheating and Danny Dyer calling me ‘Treacle’ at least once per episode. I can’t wait to get started!”
The synopsis reads: “Cheat is a ground-breaking high-stakes quiz show where contestants can literally Cheat their way to a fortune.… as long as they don’t get caught!
“In every episode, four brave players have their knowledge put to the ultimate test, as they fight it out over three rounds to avoid elimination and build a jackpot worth up to £50,000.
“But there’s one crucial twist in this brand-new quiz show… if you don’t know the answer… it pays to Cheat!”
It has a tentative release window of early 2023 and will be exclusive to Netflix.
There is also the long-gestated sequel to Human Traffic down the pipeline, titled Human Traffic 2: Revolution.
Updates have been quiet on the film, but writer and director Justin Kerrigan told Mixmag last year that “it’s time to make the film. We’ve got everything scripted and ready to go.”
