Television presenter Kirsty Gallacher has shown her support for her brother-in-law Russell Brand, who has denied a string of “very serious criminal allegations” he says have been made against him.
Comedian Russell released a video statement on Friday evening (September 15) in which he claimed he had received two “extremely disturbing letters” from a “mainstream media TV company” as well as a newspaper.
They included “a litany of extremely egregious and aggressive attacks, which are untrue”.
Now, Kirsty, who is Russell’s wife Laura’s sister, has backed him by sharing the video on Instagram, with a red love heart.
The allegations Russell claimed have been made have not yet been revealed.
Elsewhere in his video statement, the 48-year-old spoke of his “promiscuous” past and said that any relationships he’d had then had been “consensual”.
He claimed that he was the victim of a “co-ordinated media attack”.
Kirsty became Russell’s sister-in-law when he married Laura Gallacher in 2017, though the couple had first dated in 2007.
They re-connected in 2015 and welcomed their first child, daughter Mabel, in 2016.
Their second daughter, Peggy, was born two years later in 2018, and they are currently expecting their third.
Russell’s video statement came less than 24 hours before a Channel 4 Dispatches episode is set to air – though the contents of the television show are yet to be confirmed.
Elsewhere in his statement, he said: “I don’t mind them using my books and my stand-up to talk about my promiscuous, consensual conduct in the past. What I seriously refute are these very, very serious criminal allegations.
“Also it’s worth mentioning there are witnesses whose evidence directly contradicts the narratives these two mainstream outlets are trying to construct, apparently in what seems to me to be a co-ordinated attack.
“I don’t want to get into this any further because of the serious nature of the allegations but I feel like I’m being attacked and plainly they are working very closely together.
“We are obviously going to look into this matter because it is very, very serious. In the meantime I want you to stay close, stay awake but more importantly than any of that, if you can, please stay free.”
