Alan Carr ‘outed by Des O’Connor’ in first TV appearance – and had to explain to his mum

Alan Carr was ‘outed by Des O’Connor’ during his first TV appearance, the comedian has revealed.

The 48-year-old admitted his sexuality was the “worst kept secret in showbiz” at the time but has spoken out about how the legendary chat show host accidentally revealed it to the nation – and Carr’s family.

The comedian has said the incident left him “shocked” and his mum was forced to explain all. Speaking on the Life’s a Beach podcast, which he hosts, Carr recalled: “Des O’Connor outed me. I was on my first bit of TV there and he goes ‘does your dad know you’re a bit ‘woo hoo’?

“Listen it was the worst kept secret in showbiz but I was shocked. I was like ‘what?’. My mum had to explain what ‘woo hoo’ was.”

O’Connor’s remarks came when Carr appeared on his revived chat show – Des O’Connor Tonight – which aired for 23 seasons between 1977 and 2002.

Carr made his first foray as a stand-up comedian in the late 1990s and won the Best Newcomer of the Year award at the BBC New Comedy Awards in 2001.

The comedian has previously spoken about how he was outed by “a ghost” via Ouija board. He told the Where There’s a Will, There’s a Wake podcast that the board “went to spell homosexual in front of my mum and I went ‘goodbye’ and I pulled the glass”.

“So it was going ‘H, O, M, O’ and my mum went ‘homo?’… Yeah. F**king ghost tried to out me,” he said.

Carr would go on to host his own chat show – Alan Carr: Chatty Man – for 12 years and is currently a judge on RuPaul’s Drag Race UK as well as fronting Interior Design Masters for the BBC.
