BBC star halts live show as he sprints off air to family health emergency

Presenter Stephen Nolan had to leave his radio show early after his mum became ill.

The radio and TV star was fronting his show as usual on Tuesday (8 October) when he was told that his mother was unwell after a fall. He headed off to take care of the family emergency, not returning to the studio after the 10am BBC Radio Ulster news bulletin.

The star would usually be on air for around half an hour longer, so he later updated fans in a post on X. He explained that his mum Audrey was unwell and that she would always take priority.

Listeners had wondered why the Connor Philips Show began 30 minutes earlier than normal and were sympathetic when they heard about Stephen’s mum. Many wished her a speedy recovery and assured the star that he was quite right that his mum should always come first.

One person posted a message on X saying: “Best wishes to your mum Stephen, I got that same call last August. It immediately becomes your priority.” “Hope all is well, Audrey,” they added.

“Fingers crossed Stephen, and you’ve no apologies to make,” agreed someone else. Another fan wrote on the platform: “Hope your mum is okay, Stephen. Very understandable. Take care.”

“Awe Stephen I hope she is OK,” somebody else posted. “Right thing to do and she should be first. Take care.” “Hope everything is OK, family must always come first, you’ve only got one mum,” another person remarked.

Stephen has spoken about Audrey before, telling fans jhow much she means to him. Earlier this year he posted a message on Facebook celebrating her as she turned 83. Uploading a cute snap of Audrey in a restaurant he told fans: “It’s my mother’s 83rd birthday today… I love her and admire her so much.”
