Celine Dion admits she ‘could have died’ after increasing medication for devastating condition

Celine Dion revealed in a shocking revelation that her life was on the line and she “could have died” after medicating for a gruelling health battle.

The celebrated songstress, aged 56, is battling stiff person syndrome (SPS) – a rare and severe neurological condition marked by spasms, rigidity, and intense pain.

In her Amazon Prime Video exclusive, I Am: Celine Dion, she opened up about the disorder affecting her legendary pipes “When I try to breathe, my lungs are fine.

“It’s what’s in front of my lungs that is rigid because of SPS. I know what I want my voice to do,” Celine confessed, admitting to experiencing vocal cracks while singing. “That’s what happens and it’s very difficult for me to hear.”

Desperate to keep performing, she resorted to Valium to control her spasms on stage. “I needed my instrument and it was not working. We started to elevate the medicine I was on 80-90mgs of Valium a day,” she disclosed.

The ‘My Heart Will Go On’ singer starkly admitted, “I don’t want to sound dramatic but I could have died. I was taking those medicines because I needed to be able to walk, I needed to swallow, I needed the medicine to function. One more pill, two more pills, five more pills. The show must go on.”

Her battle with SPS forced her to pull the plug on her shows, as she admits: “I was lying about why I cancelled from a sinus infection to an ear infection,” and confesses to deceiving fans by saying, “Sometimes I would point my microphone to the audience and I would make them sing. There are moments where I cheated and I tapped on the microphone like it was the microphone’s fault. But the lie is too heavy now.”

Despite her health woes, Celine dazzled alongside Lady Gaga at the Paris Olympic Games Opening Ceremony. The dynamic duo have been caught in rehearsals belting out Edith Piaf’s iconic tune La Vie en Rose.

This much-anticipated performance was Celine’s grand return to the stage since her 2022 tour cancellation due to her SPS diagnosis.
