EastEnders fans ‘work out’ Ben Mitchell return as they spot clue after sad exit

EastEnders fans believe a return is already on the cards for Ben Mitchell.

Ben’s (Max Bowden) final scenes aired during Thursday’s instalment (March 28) of the BBC soap as he said an official goodbye to husband Callum (Tony Clay). Earlier in the week, Ben was arrested for a crime he committed while in America.

Ben headed to the States in the hunt for alternative treatment for Lola Pearce (Danielle Harold), who was dying from a brain tumour. Realising he would no doubt face a lengthy sentence for fraud, Ben bid an emotional farewell to his husband as they realised their relationship had to end.

The heartbreaking scenes left fans devastated, but others not so much. With Ben’s exit particularly low-key, viewers are certain this is because the character will be making a comeback at some point in the near future.

Sharing their thoughts on Reddit, one fan wrote: “We know Max is heading off, but no big send off is disappointing, even if it’s in cuffs via prison van. These goodbye scenes were touching but it feels kind of unfinished. Perhaps we get a bye-bye-Ben6 now and in 5-6 years time we get a ‘Oh look, here’s Ben7 in prison orange, getting ready to be released’ scene.”

A second agreed: “Everyone saying that Ben deserved a better ending…he always has a naff ending because he always returns. Let’s relax.”

Also pointing out the character’s sudden departure, another penned: “Goodbye Ben that was sad a very rushed exit indeed, gutted for Lexi losing now both parents. glad she’s got Jay & Callum. @MaxBowden thankyou for you’re time on screen you played a smasher as Ben for the last five years, hope you make a return back.”

A fourth chipped in: “Yes, it would be slightly ridiculous to have yet another actor play Ben , but it’s soap and recasts are a part of that. If Max can’t come back then it’s better to go with someone new than return to an actor who wasn’t as good.”

Max addressed his emotional exit following five years on the BBC soap. The actor, 29, admitted he would be “forever grateful” for how the show helped him through difficult times. He also thanked viewers for their support before signing off the post: “I love you all. Ben Mitchell 6.0 over and out Goodbye EE! I’ll miss you all.”
