The story of how Shania Twain found love again after her first husband’s affair is quite an interesting one.
As the singer celebrates her 59th birthday, we’re taking a look inside her love life and how she ended up swapping husbands with her ex-best friend.
Shania met her first husband Robert John ‘Mutt’ Lange back in June 1993 after he offered to produce and write songs for her next album. They later married in December of that year and shared a son called Eja together.

A few years later, Shania decided to hire an assistant during her stay in Switzerland named Marie-Anne Thiébaud. Not only did she help Shania take care of their home and family, but she also became one of her best pals.
Their two families became very close and often hung out with one another, alongside Marie-Anne’s husband Frédéric Thiébaud, who was a Swiss executive for Nestlé. Shania later told TV host Oprah Winfrey: “Fred and Mutt were good friends, and Marie-Anne and I were good friends.”
However, in 2008, Lange told the famous singer that he wanted a divorce, giving no reason for the split. In a panic, Shania went to Marie-Anne for advice. The singer told Oprah: “I said, ‘Marie-Anne, don’t you think my husband is acting strange?’ And she said, ‘No, I don’t see anything strange.'”
But it turned out Marie-Anne was reportedly having an affair with Shania’s husband, which Frédéric discovered after he found “strange hotel receipts, phone bills, and even a lingerie set in his wife’s suitcase,” according to the Daily Mail.
On The Ellen DeGeneres Show, Shania told the host about the shocking revelation. Shanie said: “I called [Marie-Anne] up. I wanted to give her the opportunity to tell me herself without me accusing her.”
But her former assistant lied again about the affair and changed her phone number so Shania couldn’t contact her again. But through their shared heartbreak, Shania and Frédéric ended up becoming close.
Their strong connection started as a friendship, which Shania cited as: “twisted, but so beautifully twisted.”
She told Ellen: “Holding each other up was a very difficult time emotionally for both of us. And we really found something very beautiful in the end and unexpected.”
In 2009, the pair officially began dating and got engaged a year later in December 2010. Just one month later, the pair got hitched on New Year’s Day 2011 in Puerto Rico.
They now live together in Switzerland, where they first met. As for her first husband Lange, he ended up tying the knot with Marie-Anne.
Shania continues to co-parent with her ex-husband but refuses to engage with her former friend. She told The Post: “I don’t invite that trigger into my life… She’s not my future. She’s my past.”
