Back in August, it was revealed that Hollywood big shots Jack Black and Paul Rudd were in talks to star in a reboot of the classic 90s thriller, Anaconda.
Now, according to Deadline, Suicide Squad’s Daniela Melachior has joined the cast in an undisclosed role. The Portuguese actress, who starred in the 2021 superhero flick and also appeared in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, Assassin Club and Fast X, is the latest addition to the project.
The new take on the film, penned and directed by Tom Gormican, aims to add more humour to the plot. The original movie saw Jennifer Lopez, Owen Wilson and Ice Cube play a National Geographic film crew held hostage by a crazed hunter seeking the world’s deadliest snake.
It’s been hinted that the upcoming project won’t be a direct remake but rather a fresh interpretation of the classic. The plot will focus on a group of pals venturing into the jungle to recreate their favourite childhood film, reports the Mirror.
While it’s still uncertain what roles Jack and Paul might assume, the two main characters are described as a director moonlighting as a wedding videographer and an actor who used to play a cop on TV. The project is being produced by Brad Fuller and Andrew Form’s Fully Formed production company.
Earlier this year, it was announced that Andrew had secured a first-look deal with Sony division Screen Gems. Given Jack and Paul’s previous successful partnerships with Sony on the Jumanji and Ghostbusters franchises, it seems likely they’ll be involved in the Anaconda reboot.
Anaconda, a cult classic, made an impressive $16.6 million on its opening weekend and managed to hold onto the top spot for another week. The film eventually grossed $136.8 million worldwide, securing its place as a fan favourite.
The success of Anaconda spawned an entire movie franchise, with four sequels following the original. Anacondas: The Hunt for the Blood Orchid hit the big screen in 2004, seven years after the first film.
This was followed by Anaconda 3: Offspring in 2008 and Anacondas: Trail of Blood in 2009. The fifth and final instalment of the franchise, Lake Placid vs Anaconda, was released on April 25, 2015.
A release date of Anaconda is yet to be revealed.
