The nation’s gaze was firmly fixed on Dortmund as the Euro 2020 runners-up aimed to secure a chance at making history in Sunday’s Berlin showdown against favourites Spain – with even American band The Killers getting swept up in the excitement and joining in.
In a video clip shared on social media, a massive stage screen can be seen displaying the final moments of England’s win before the final whistle sounded and victory was clinched. Once it was confirmed that England would face Spain in the final, streamers filled the arena and The Killers launched into song, choosing Mr Brightside as the anthem for celebration.
“Well @thekillers just did the coolest thing ever on stage as England won the semi final… #ENGNED #ItsComingHome,” a Twitter user posted as they shared the video online last night. “This is bloody awesome,” one responded, with another chiming in: “They’re such a class act!”
Fans were quick to highlight the iconic tune blasting out just moments after England’s stellar win, with one Twitter user hailing The Killers for sparking the festivities by “playing the most British song” while another quipped: “Please rise for the national anthem.”
The Killers have bagged themselves not one, but two Guinness World Records on Monday, right before they rocked London’s The O2 arena. Their banger ‘Mr Brightside’ has snagged the record for Most cumulative weeks on the UK singles chart (one song), racking up a whopping 416 weeks in the Top 100 of the Official Singles Chart as of 4 July 2024.
Not only that, but they’ve also nabbed the title for Longest stay on the UK singles chart by a group yep, you guessed it, 416 weeks and counting. To give you an idea of how massive this is, ‘Mr Brightside’ has been hanging out in the Top 100 for nearly eight years over 60 different chart stints.
Released back in 2003 and then again in 2004, ‘Mr Brightside’ was the first single off The Killers’ debut album, Hot Fuss, and soared to its highest chart spot on 5 June 2004 at No. 1. Mind-blowingly, it only spent its opening week in the Top 20 and a mere seven weeks in the Top 40.
