The Wanted’s Max George has revealed that he may need to undergo open heart surgery after being rushed to hospital last week. He had previously hinted at the possibility of spending Christmas in hospital due to potential cardiac issues, but now said things could be more serious than first thought.

Max’s mum, Barbara, shared some insight into the situation, stating: “Max is in the hospital right now and he’s being very well taken care of. I took him to A and E this week where he was looked at.”

In a recent update to his fans, the 36-year-old singer disclosed that he might require a pacemaker to rectify an issue with the “lower part of his heart”. Sharing a video from the hospital on his Instagram Stories, he said: “So latest is that 100 per cent I’m going to have a little friend put in here at some point,” pointing towards his heart.

He further explained that he needs additional tests before doctors can decide the type of surgery he will need. He added: “I’ve got an issue with the bottom part of my heart, it’s called a block. The trick bit is is what I have put in, until I have further tests we don’t know what’s caused it.”

He ruled out alcohol as a cause, stating: “We’ve cancelled out a few things, like alcohol for example, I’ve not had a drink in four-and-a-half years. So it’s not that. It’s a bit of a mystery really, the hard bit is the waiting.”, reports the Mirror.

Max admitted that the wait has been ‘tough’ and mentioned that his heart rate is “really really low which they’re monitoring 24/7.”

“It’s just one of them things, unfortunately,” he remarked. “Whatever I get I just got to get on with it. I’m hoping pacemaker is good, we can do pretty good with that.”

When Max first talked about his health issues last Thursday, he explained: “Yesterday I felt really unwell and was taken into hospital. Unfortunately after some tests they’ve found that I have some issues with my heart. I have a lot more tests to determine the extent of the problems and what surgery I will need to get me back on my feet. It’s gonna be a difficult few weeks / months… and Christmas in a hospital bed wasn’t exactly what I had planned! But, as always, I’m surrounded with love and support by my wonderful partner Maisie, her family, my family and friends.. and I’m 100% in the best place.”
