A Minecraft Movie has seen teenagers attend screenings and engage in a bizarre social media trend, which has left some cinema workers wanting to quit due to the disruption
Cinema staff are contemplating quitting after being overwhelmed by swarms of teenagers who all did the same thing during viewings of the Minecraft movie.
The new movie sensation, A Minecraft Movie, dropped on Friday (April 5), and has swiftly made its way to the highest opening weekend takings for a video game adaptation. The blockbuster has crafted an eye-watering £233million globally and sparked many social media trends. However, the flick’s success has brought chaos courtesy of rowdy youths, leaving cinema workers to deal with the aftermath.
Stunned adults have been left reeling after a new social media trend has been encouraging anti social behaviours in cinemas. Social media has been bombarded with TikTok vids featuring popcorn showers and echoing shouts as fans recite lines made famous by viral videos.
A social media video emerged which saw kids throw popcorn aggressively, eventually led to a brawl between viewers. Staff have reportedly also been forced into cleaning up debris and even vomit after the film has finished.
Now, the Witney branch of Cineworld in Oxfordshire has restricted viewings to avoid the situation. A customer notice reads: “Any form of anti-social behaviour, especially anything that may disturb other guests such as loud screaming, clapping and shouting will not be tolerated.
“Anyone who is found to be acting in this manner will be removed from the screening and not entitled to a refund.”
One bewildered cinema-goer took to X and posted about their surreal encounter: “I saw Minecraft in the theatre with my kids last night and am still processing what I saw.”
They added: “The only cinematic experience I can compare the audience participation to is Rocky Horror, except it’s with teenagers and their phones and the movie is not even a weekend old.”
Admittedly perplexed at first – much to their sons’ amusement – they eventually grasped the situation: “I had no idea what was happening at first – much to my sons’ laughter. Then I started to twig and I now know I have no idea what constitutes a hit at the box office. High school kids and adolescents alike screaming random Jack Black lines because of YouTube shorts and TikToks. Never seen anything like that before.”
One shared: “My 17-year-old son was telling me about the audience’s reaction, too, said it was the most fun he’s had at a movie. I told him it sounds like how Rocky Horror was for us in the ’80s.”
Although cinemagoers are enjoying the movie, workers are left exasperated. Following the mayhem of opening weekend, one employee described it as a “living nightmare”, while another lamented that viral videos only make their job “harder”.
Taking to social media, an exasperated staffer said: “I’m a theatre employee: by throwing water, popcorn and all that onto people (which many have been doing) y’all are making our jobs harder.”
Another vented their frustration: “Theatre employee here. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE just don’t be obnoxious I worked both opening days and it has been a living nightmare. Nothing wrong with cheering during big moments but don’t be swearing.”
TikTok footage showing rowdy patrons pelting popcorn and filming inside a cinema reportedly led to police intervention.
Now, director Jared Hess has released a statement about the situation. “It’s weird when you’re having too much fun and the cops get called,” said Hess. “It’s funny because I think it’s just literally cheering and throwing popcorn, which is so funny to me that cops are getting called for popcorn. Yeah, it’s hilarious. I’ve seen so many funny videos.
“It’s great, especially when people are climbing on their friends’ shoulders and standing up and cheering for those moments. It’s like this crazy anticipation. But, man, I’m just glad people are making memories with their friends and families.”
